lehigh sororitites

Hey could any current Lehigh students describe the reputations of the various sororities at Lehigh? Thanks!

i want to know this too! hopefully someone will answer now...

i would too. i also want to know if there is any hazing. i’ve heard some of the frats are having major hazing problems and 2 have been dis-banned because of it. thankx

alpha chi omega (a chi o)- These women are typically from the Long Island/Westchester region and are often Jewish. They are not very involved on campus but are considered to be a pretty good sorority by fraternities. They are often criticized by other students for using drugs.

alpha gamma delta (alpha gam)- These women are very involved on campus and consistently have a high chapter GPA but are not typically considered a “good” sorority by fraternities.

alpha omicron pi (AOPi)- These women have recently experienced many scandals revolving around drugs, sex and having a “facebook stalking guide” to find freshman girls they want to recruit, among others. They do not go to parties often but are usually considered a top sorority by fraternities. They are pretty involved on campus.

alpha phi- These women are not very involved on campus and are not usually considered a top sorority by fraternities but are also not viewed as a bad one. They tend to be a diverse mix of girls with no real stereotype.

delta gamma (DG)- These women have a reputation for partying. They are usually considered a top sorority by fraternities and are pretty involved on campus. They experienced scandal after kicking out one of their members this past year.

gamma phi beta (gamma phi or gphi)- These women are not very involved on campus and are usually considered a top sorority by fraternities. Many hail from the Westchester region and tend to be Jewish.

kappa alpha theta (theta)- These women are pretty involved on campus and are usually not considered a good sorority by fraternities. They have a very diverse group of girls. They often have the lowest house GPA.

pi beta phi (pi phi)- These women are very involved on campus and have a partying reputation. They are not considered a top sorority by fraternities, but they are also not considered a bad one. They often have the lowest house GPA also.

Oftentimes, fraternity men will refer to something called the “top three” (AOPi, Gamma Phi, DG) or the “top four” (AOPi, Gamma Phi, DG, AXO), depending on the fraternity they are in.

No matter the “reputation,” it is important to see where you can yourself the most after meeting the women in each chapter.

Lehigh is also planning to add another sorority that women may join during formal recruitment in January.

A lot of the descriptions written above are not true. Granted, all the sororities have different stereotypes or identifying characteristics but those are just simply biased and not right. There are sororities that party and ones that concentrate on grades or community service. Your best bet is to get to know as many girls during the fall semester whether it is out at a party or in class.

lehighjunior, can you point out what is “not true”?

thanks

Sure. AOPi has not had a house scandal about sex, nor have they had “many scandals” as mentioned above. Alpha Phi is usually very involved on campus, whereas DG and Pi Phi aren’t as involved. I wouldn’t say girls in Gamma Phi tend to be Jewish. DG used to have a bigger party reputation and there was no scandal this year. Most of the GPA generalizations are based only on this year, not the past few years of the chapter.

here are Lehigh’s ranking of the sororities:

[Accreditation Reports 2009 through 2010 | Fraternity and Sorority Affairs](http://www.lehigh.edu/~indost/greek/acc0910.html)

according to this information, delta gamma and pi phi are very involved on campus.

I would agree with these stereotypes for the most part, but i do think APhi is pretty involved. That’s the only thing I would change. I know all the scandals you’re referring too. Some were kept more hush hush than others.

Based on the sorority descriptions I see, no sorority sounds very appealing… What are the pros/cons to joining a sorority? Are there any sororities for wholesome/athletic girls who like to party in moderation?

emem, what kind of scandals can sororities possibly have?

a few of the girls were late to class?

kelly57- honestly, she could fit in with any of the sororities. those are just stereotypes, and there are girls in every house that don’t match up with their stereotypes.

if you would like, you can PM me, and i’ll try to help more

here are the most recent dean’s list percentages for each chapter at lehigh. the bottom part is where the sororities are:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~indost/greek/PDFs/Spring%202010%20Dean’s%20List%20Report.pdf

lehighgal, are the 28% and 39% increases in frat and sororities members from the fall 2009 to the spring 2010 semesters because freshmen actually join in the spring of freshmen year and are counted as such?

if not, what do you think is the reason?

yes, that is correct

Ok thanks…

then that means that 39% of all students were members of frats and sororities as of Spring 2010.

so for those that feel left out if they don’t join a frat/sororities, there are another 2,934 undergraduates (61% of total undergraduates) that don’t join a frat/sorority.

is greek life a big deal at lehigh? or can you still have fun without joining?

its a bigger deal than admissions and the tour guides let it on to be…

the majority of lehigh students are either in greek life or play a varsity sport… the others often end up trying to join a fraternity/sorority their sophomore year because they regret not joining freshman year. there is not a whole lot to do besides greek life because dorm parties do not exist and speakers and other forms of entertainment do not attract too much attention. however, some people do not join greek life and still have fun. the best thing to do is rush, and if you don’t like it, then don’t join.
