Lehigh university vs. Colorado school of mine

I want to study engineering. I was admitted into Lehigh university and Colorado school of mine. I love Lehigh’s campus and I think I will have a lot of fun in college if I go there, but it is really expensive. For CSM, I can get instate tuition, and I know they have good course too, but for the campus life, I don’t think I will like it that much.
What should I do?

Hi there,

I am a Mines alumni from the mechanical engineering department. I did a BS and MS. Choosing Mines is basically dependent on what you plan on studying. Anytime someone asks me about Mines, I give the same advice. If plan on doing earth science type engineering (i.e. Petroleum, Geological, Geophysics, Mining, etc.), then Mines wins hands down. The industry connections are hard to beat. If you plan on studying in a general program (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc), then it isn’t always there best. That doesn’t mean NEVER choose Mines, simply that your other options may suit you better. Lehigh might offer a better program (I don’t know since I didn’t attend there). Mines’ social life is what you make it. I was in Greek life and felt that my social life was enriched by it. Denver is 30 minutes drive or 1 hour train ride away. The clear creek runs right through Golden, and the mountains are right there. Mines is tough, but good students usually develop good time management to do a lot outside of class. Physics and Chemical Engineering are hardest majors (debatable of course) based on my observation. If you work hard, you can do well and graduate on time.

So to summarize:

If you are doing earth science, YES
If you aren’t, MAYBE

What are you planning on studying?
