Ok, the rivalry is everywhere. haha!!
Even students like me have to face this. As I have seen on the other threads, lots of students end up narrowing their college list to lehigh and Lafayette.
My question is:
Which one is, Lehigh or Lafayette, hard to get into?

According to what I have read, lehigh seems to be more selective. But, this does not seem particularly true because in a few places, I have also seen people saying Lafayette as more selective one.
Please have your say and help me.
Thanks in advance !

Having visited both it is actually odd that students have a hard time choosing between them. They have such different campuses, programs and student bodies! Lafayette is a small LAC that also has engineering. Lehigh is a university with a broad range of offerings and a larger percentage of students in pre-professional studies (engineering and business).
I know they are rivals in sports, but if you really love one of those two, then how could you also love the other?

I should preface this by saying that my D is a very happy freshman at Lafayette. We looked at both schools but Lehigh did not appeal to her in the least (Lehigh was a bigger school than she wanted, she didn’t feel as comfortable with the students she met, Lehigh seemed more frat/sorority oriented to her, not to mention the hill…). But if you prefer a larger sized school (a mid-size university as opposed to a LAC), it is easy to see the appeal of Lehigh. The two schools seemed very comparable academically and tons of kids apply to both.

From what we could tell, selectivity is similar for the two schools. A good friend of hers got into Lehigh but was wait listed at Lafayette (ultimately he did not get in) but I’m sure there are people who have had the opposite experience. From what I understand, there is an advantage to applying ED to either school, so if you have a definite first choice, then that is option is worth consideration.

Yeah, I’m surprised if there really is much of a one-or-the-other between Lafayette and Lehigh.

The only thing they have in common is that they’re both institutes of higher education that both happen to be located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

Based on the data that each report on their Common Data Sets (google

The schools have comparable acceptance rates and comparable SAT/ACT scores (Lehigh a bit more competitve in these areas). The biggest difference is that Lehigh reports that 95% of its class was in the top 10% of their HS class while Laffayette says it’s about 2/3 (however, Lehigh’s number looks a bit high given the SAT score range).

happy1 - My son had the same reaction, did not like Lehigh at all, loved Lafayette. Ultimately he decided the CS department was too small for his tastes and he got better merit aid elsewhere, but otherwise he really liked Lafayette. He did not apply to Lehigh.

I can now consider Lehigh to be more selective, but this does not mean that if you get into Lehigh, you will definitely get into Lafayette. That is to say, in general, Lehigh is comparatively hard to get into

@ beantowngirl: I don’t how or why, but I am literally in love with both of them. May be it’s because both come to be my almost perfect match, but are unique in their own ways.

Students get confused between the two because they, however being the competitors, have their own specialities. They cannot be compared in few things, which blocks a full comparison. For example, one has the liberality and the other has the diversity, which in noway can be compared. But both share few programs, which makes them the competitors.
A lack of complete comparison is what makes students confused.
