Lehigh vs. Northeastern?

I plan on majoring in some type of engineering. Lehigh is slightly less expensive than NU, but practically the same. I'm completely torn, any incite would be wonderful, thanks!

Hi kathleenmonks,

Here’s how I see it. Consider the following things:

1) According to U.S. News and World Report, Lehigh’s engineering program ranks at 38th in the nation, while Northeastern only ranks at 61st.

2) Northeastern’s undergraduate population is 3 times larger than Lehigh’s - which might impact course availability and one-on-one interaction with professors.

3) Lehigh’s endowment is nearly twice Northeastern’s, which tells you a lot about alumni involvement and the forward-thinking characteristics of a university.

4) And then you should also consider campus type. Northeastern seems more urban. Although Lehigh is on the southern skirt of a small city, the campus itself feels suburban in nature.

Good luck in making your decision. Both schools are good, but I’m naturally inclined to think Lehigh is better.

Best,

Another big factor should be in for consideration is that Northeastern is a 5 year coop program. By Sophomore year, you could be working 6 months out of the year at some engineering job. It would take 5 years to graduate at Northeastern while Lehigh is a normal 4 year program.

I live in the Boston area and my husband works with engineers in the area and without question, a Lehigh grad is seem at a much higher level than a NU grad.

Lehigh is very highly rated on ROI, ahead of a some Ivies and is known for turning out well rounded, well prepared engineers.

Thank you so much everyone, that all helps a ton. :)

I was also wondering about the Greek life at Lehigh. I’ve heard how much there is, which I am not opposed to, but is it too much?

Check out the existing threads on greek life, but yes, greek involvement is fairly high at Lehigh, I believe it is around 40%. However, my son is not a member of a social fraternity (he is a member of an academic fraternity) and his social life does not suffer. He is nota drinker so he found that greek life was pretty much centered around drinking, so lost interest.

I just submitted my deposit for Lehigh! so happy with my choice! :)

Wow, congratulations on the final decision! I know you will love it here!
