As of now, these three schools are my only three options. Here's the situation for each:

Lehigh- I love the campus and the social scene, but the surrounding area is kind of a turnoff and at this point I would struggle to afford it.

Stevens Institute of Technology- I haven't received my financial information for this school yet, but I was accepted to the honors college which would give me great research and study abroad opportunities. The downside is that it is more focused on engineering than my major (physics), and it is a little bit too close to home for my tastes. Also, the whole 75 percent male thing.

Stony Brook- The real appeal here is in my major, physics, because of the laboratory and well known professors that work here. I was also accepted to the honors college, which is a huge plus, and I would easily be able to afford it. The issue is that I am not sure how much I would enjoy my time there, the atmosphere didn't particularly strike me as all that great.

So basically, does anyone have any advice for me? My major is important, but even more than that I'm concerned about the experience that I will have there.

Bumping because all three of these are on my son’s list. We’ve visited all three…Stony was during Christmas break so I know we didn’t get a great impression without the students there so we’re definately gonna go again. I agree about the area surrounding Lehigh…not exactly a metropolis…but I thought the school itself more than made up for it. I loved the close-knit feeling I got at Stevens. The dining hall was pretty lame but the views are amazing. They seemed to have a lot of NYC connections for internships and co-op opportunities which was nice.

Hm… you’re right. But before I make my final decision I think that I’ll be doing overnights at all three schools, just to make sure that I didn’t miss anything. Thanks for the help, best of luck to everyone else in their decisions or college search!

Lehigh is the better overall school of the three (and the better social environment), but Stony Brook has the better Physics department (top 20 in the country)
