Lehigh

Do you think that it is stupid to be interested in Lehigh as a likely English/Journalism major/minor? What do you guys think of Lehigh? Academically, socially, reputation, etc.

Anybody???

bump getting desperate

Academically, Lehigh is extremely challenged. There is definitely grade deflation. Professors are allowed to give As to only 15% of their students.

Socially, Lehigh is a huge party school. 70% of students are involved in greek life.

Lehigh has a great reputation with engineering and business schools ranked in the top 20. Lehigh is ranked #1 for accounting.

Thank you for responding. Darn, that sucks that Lehigh has grade deflation- definitely a downer. You say that it has a great rep for engineering & business, which I know, but do you think that that takes away from the Arts & Sciences college? As a prospective English/Journalism major it worries me that the reputation is not kind to that facet of the school. What do you think?

No, CAS (College of Arts & Science) is highly regarded as well.

Something else I forgot to mention, students at Lehigh are very preppy. In addition, there is a lot of alcohol and drug use, especially within the frats.

Also, Lehigh is located in downtown Bethleham. Extremely dangerous area. In fact, students have had things stolen from them by middle school students armed with guns. Very scary.

I have 2 presently at Lehigh and they are not “scared” to wander around Bethlehem. As with any city they know not to walk alone in the late hours of the night. The campus is very safe and the new casino is gorgeous.

WaitingDad,
What College are your kids in? How do they like their classes? Is grade deflation a problem? Did they go Greek?

Actually, I’ve heard great things about Lehigh’s journalism department. I forget where I read it, but it’s definitely well regarded

FWIW:

“students have had things stolen from them by middle school students armed with guns”

lol…

mksuperfan…I have one in Engineering and the other in Liberal Arts. Both have gone Greek and both love everything about Lehigh. The saying about Lehigh that the students work hard and play hard appears to be true. They know these will be the best 4 years of their lives and I stress they don’t miss a moment.

There is not grade deflation in English/Journalism. I’m an athlete at Lehigh and if you look at the GPAs published for those above 3.2 on the Patriot League Honor Roll there are always 3.9 psych/english/journalism majors bringing up team averages while a 3.9 is rare in Engineering.

Thanks for the feedback! Negotiator, how has your experience at Lehigh been?

i have a roommate who is a journalism major at lehigh, and it’s a really great program. she’s also been lucky with internships during the summer, too. you can definitely get As here, and i doubt it’s only 15% of the students. i’ve had maybe one arts and sciences class all four years that graded on a curve (though i didn’t take any math courses).

and i agree with WaitingDad-i live off campus in bethlehem this year and was nervous because i’d heard a few stories, but they definitely get blown way out of proportion and happen rarely (i don’t know anyone personally and i’ve been here almost four years). i’ve never had any problems even coming home by myself late at night. the neighborhoods right off campus (within about a 3-5 block radius) are mostly student housing and people are always around.

plenty of lehigh students are not preppy, and MyBlsflHrt, only 35% are involved in Greek life–that 70% statistic was from playboy (not exactly an authority on undergraduate college programs). there’s plenty to do and plenty of people to meet if you’re not involved. i’ve had a great experience here as an A&S student who doesn’t party constantly–it’s not like 100% of students are doing the same thing all the time.

It’s not a strict 15% for giving out As. Rather, it is an average of the As in all classes, so smaller classes may have an higher percentage of As while a big class will have less. No doubt it’s hard to get As, but it’s not impossible. Also remember that humanity classes will have more As than science classes.

In addition, I’d like to say that Lehigh has a very strong alumni network, which will be a lot of help when searching for an internship or a job.

Fortunately, the safety problem has been improving in recent years. Nevertheless, I would still refrain more wandering around alone late at night.

Yes, you will find all kinds of students at Lehigh just like at any other college, but the majority of students are preppy and that’s definitely something important to consider when choosing your college, especially if it’s a small private as opposed to big public (you’ll find more variety at a big public because there’s so many more people to meet).

Are you sure that you aren’t thinking of Princeton? :)

The above is not true, although certain professors may make this their policy, especially in the weed-out classes such as calculus and physics. Lehigh itself does not interfere with grading except perhaps if a professor were to fail a significant number of students.

High school students arriving at college are often shocked at how their As and Bs in high school turn into Bs and Cs in college. College in general requires more work and skill to achieve the same grades.

No, it’s definitely 15% of students. I know this because my father is a professor at Lehigh and it is the guideline they are given for handing out As.

Princeton restricts As to 35% of its students.

That’s your father’s policy – or maybe his department’s. I know for a fact that professors are not told how many, or how few, As to give out.

No it’s not his policy, it’s the school’s policy.
