Does anyone have an idea as to how long it would take to ride a bike from north to central campus? Just like a casual speed, I'm wondering because I don't like relying on buses (I'm dual enrolled at OSU right now and have to take the bus everywhere, lame) but I plan on doing materials or chem engineering, and ideally I'd like to live on central. It sounds as if it takes around 45 mins to walk it, so I figured maybe an 11 min bike ride?

If any UMich students have any other info to share regarding the use of a bike around campus that's welcomed too, like bike theft frequency or availability of lockup places, ect.

There are a lot of bike places, and not that many bike thefts unless you carelessly leave it unlocked. (Get one of those sturdy metal ones to be extra careful). The bike ride from north to central is not long but may be tedious especially in michigan weather.

Depending on where you want to go on central campus, it might be more of a 15 min plus bike ride. Also, when there are a few inches of snow you will need to take the bus.

Yea I figure taking Ohio’s weather and subtracting a few degrees and adding some snow is about like Michigan, so I won’t be planning any snow trekking via bike, but thanks for all the info, I just wanted to know the feasibility of biking between classes, and at least umich will be a safer area than osu, where random drugged up people serenade you with epic rap ballads then expect money…freeloaders

That is a good point MParadox09. Ann Arbor is a much safer town than many other schools. It might be colder than most, but fewer are actually better places to attend for four years.

haha well I’m not enrolled at osu as an undergrad, just taking classes there and at my high school…plus I’m not a huge fan of ohio, and going to osu is like living in a beehive and getting a factory made education (in my opinion) and I already get that from my high school with its 450+ senior class

plus Michigan’s engineering program is top of the line, and blue is a better color than scarlet. Nuff said

11 minutes from North to Central sounds about right. Usually riding a bike is faster than the bus, on average, when you consider walking from class and waiting for the bus. You can still ride when it snows, too, because they take good care of the sidewalks.

There are plenty of places to lock your bike at every building. The bike racks can get pretty full during nice weather, but during the winter you’ll find out who the hard-core commuters are. Theft is pretty rare, but you should still lock your bike all the time. If you leave it outside overnight, or if you have quick-release axles, you should consider locking your wheels as well.
