Length of Auditions at the Unifieds

I am worrying ahead of time about how to get all the auditions I would like to do scheduled in three days at the Chicago Unifieds. Can those of you who have auditioned in the last two years give the length of time for the different schools you auditioned for?

What I have gathered from reading here is that Juilliard is a half day and a night callback if you get that far. Also taking a half day are NYU, UNCSA, BU and CMU. Suny Purchase, UMinn Guthrie and Rutgers are only 15 minutes to a half hour. Is this right?

List all the others you know about but please don’t get the mt auditions mixed in because I know those are longer. I would also like to hear any advice on HOW you got the schools to cooperate in getting all the dates and times coordinated. Thanks!

Here are the ones I know about:

Rutgers – probably pretty quick. The on-campus auditions were quick, except that you had to wait a bit because there were such huge numbers auditioning. There was no information session.

BU – fairly quick also. But there is an information session.

CMU and NYU – longer. I commented on these on another thread. Both have information sessions.

Purchase – in past years, they have “called back” a small percentage of the auditioners at Unifieds to stay and have their audition videotaped. You should allow time for that. There was not much of an information session when my son auditioned on campus. There will probably be huge numbers of students auditioning for Purchase (any excellent, relatively inexpensive school like Rutgers or Purchase will be like that). I’m not sure how they organize the auditions at Unifieds in terms of waiting time and such.

I’d say that even for the quicker ones you should figure on an hour, total.

Over the last 3 years both my kids and the students I coached did the Unifieds in LA and the SF Consortium, but I am sure the times will be similiar to Chicago:

If you schedule a morning audition with Juilliard you will know by noon if you are needed for callbacks, if you are called back you need to be there the whole day and into the night. BU has a 30 minute info session, you are then slotted for you time. If you are last it will be 4 hours (happened to my daughter - but she was able to do push up her audition with MGSA while she waited). NYU is the same as BU. UNCSA has an info session first, but they will send you your audition time prior. They are also very accomodating if you need to switch your time. When my daughter auditioned for CMU the kids that were asked to be seen by both auditors were required to stay through the whole audition session. Suny Purchase is a ten minute slot, you can pick online after your application is in. You can also change it at anytime which is great! In SF they asked my son to repeat one of his pieces which they filmed. He was with them about 20 minutes. UMinn Guthrie is a time slot, however in my experience with the school they spend a lot of time which each student, so plan at least an hour around your slotted time. They are also great at accomodating changes when needed. Rutgers MGSA was 15 minutes. USC is a whole afternoon or morning. Info session first, then you are broken into groups for the interview and audition. UCLA does an info session first which is at least 30 minutes. You are given a number as you arrive, and if you arrive at the appointed time you will probably be last so plan a whole morning or afternoon. After the audition is an interview. U Michigan is slightly different. The parents and student are invited in together to privately speak with the auditor about the school and program. The parents then leave and the student auditions. It takes about 15 minutes. SMU (off campus) is a specific time slot and you are filmed. Again about 15 minutes. DePaul is the whole morning or afternoon. Fordham is a time slot - this year in SF - they were running behind so I would allow an hour around the audition. CalArts had an info session then you were called in. You do not know prior what your time slot is, so allow the whole morning or afternoon.

It may sound like a lot but my kids and students have been able to schedule 4 auditions in one day  Hope this helps!

Thanks! Do you or anyone have any tips on strategies for getting all that done?

When my daughter auditioned at the LA Unifieds a couple of years ago, several of the schools were actually still there the day after Unifieds officially ended. If I remember correctly, she did BU and NYU on that 4th day.

The other thing that helped was getting the applications in early. The more time you have to work out conflicts the easier it is to get everything to fit.

In relation to what Saltlakemom said, some schools have auditions during Unifieds but the schools are not actually officially part of the Unifieds. This is something you should look into further.

BU, CMU, UNCSA, and SUNY-Purchase are all members of the Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs. They hold auditions around the same time and in many of the same cities as the Unified auditions.
