Length of the general commonapp "why transfer" essay as well as the "additional info"

I pretty much finished my essays/supplemental's, but I'm curious if mine is too long.

My general and more formal "why transfer" essay is 834 words. It's a page and a half, size 12, not double spaced.

My much more laid back "additional info" section is 1,074 word.s It's so long because I was going into detail about my experiences in high school. It's almost 2 pages, size 12, not double spaced.

Is the length of my essays going to be detrimental to my decision? My Michigan/Columbia supplementals are fine word count wise.

I don’t think the “why transfer” length is too bad, although if it is possible to cut it down to one page (since it is not double spaced), that might be better.

I didn’t have an “additional info” section on any transfer application I had, so I don’t know if that’s too long without knowing what is in it. My suggestion is to set them aside for as long as you can (when are the deadlines to send them out?). Then go back and reread them so that it is fresh to you again and see how they sound. Does anything sound redundant at the second reading, or frivolous? Get some feedback from a trusted advisor or other professors. They might be able to suggest cutting or expanding on some points and give you an idea of how the essays might be perceived.

Thank you for that link. I’m feeling a little adventurous though by keeping what I have since there isn’t any semantics on the current app stating otherwise…
