Length?

Hi everybody,

I was recently accepted into McGill's Faculty of Arts. Coming from France, I don't really know if I'll need to complete a Freshman Program for my first year. Is it always required? Or not necessarily?

Furthermore, I'm planning on majoring in North American Studies. If I look at the description, it says it is a 36-credit-program. Knowing that I will (at least) take 15 credits a semester, I'm a little confused. Are these 36 credits just part of something bigger? Because I was told several times that it was supposed to take 4 years to graduate... It's not always easy to find useful informations on the website!

Last question, when exactly can we pick a major? I thought that once I was accepted, I could do it right away but Minerva is confusing me. I might just me dumb, I'm not sure.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

hey keepwaiting,
for your first question: mcgill uses a U0 (freshman), U1, U2, U3 (fourth year, or third year if you start as a U1… more on this later) system. so your “U-Year” standing depends on how many credits you have coming in from high school.

if you have 24+ credits coming in, you’ll skip U0/freshman and go straight into U1. you will do a 3 year undergrad program total. none-24 credits = you’re in U0 (like i was!), and you’ll do four years of undergrad

you must pick your major at the end of your U1 year (in the winter term) but you can choose it earlier. the reason you can’t pick it right now is because mcgill has a “blackout” period (to prevent graduating students from changing their major last minute) but you should be able to choose it during the summer.
