Hey all...so I know that the limit for a common app essay and many supplements is 650 words. I'm the kind of person who likes to use all they can get to craft the best piece of writing possible, but today my English teacher informed us that it's best to only write about 500 words. I have also heard that English teachers are definitely not the best source to get information about college essays...so what do you guys think about length? Thanks in advance!!

I think it is ideal to be in the 550-600 words range.

bump…

If you have written all you have to say on your topic… then that’s enough. If you were able to write your idea and story in 550 words it is no sense to add 100 words filler.

Nonetheless, if you can create actual meaning in those words, it is worth going all the way. There is no one best way to write the common application essay.

In my opinion, I think 600+ words is ideal for most essays. You don’t have to add random description to get it to exactly 650 but I tried to tell as many different things about myself through my story in the 650 words I was given.

If the essay is well written, it won’t matter. And if it’s not well written, it also won’t matter. But for different reasons.

@Phongtheha @Ctesiphon @WasatchWriter thank you for all of your answers, very helpful!

Don’t do exactly 650, but a little more than 500 is definitely best…but the most important thing is to write more than 650 and then edit it down! Here’s other helpful essay writing advice: Easy SAT - YouTube
