Lenovo vs. Dell: 2 Questions

I will be majoring in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue and am in the process of researching computers. I have a budget of $1600. I'm not into gaming. I am very computer-illiterate!

I have narrowed down my choices between a Lenova T420s and and a Dell Latitude E6420.
Is there any advantage of one over the other? Any others I should consider?

Also, with regard to processors:
The Lenova T420s has a Intel Core i5-2520M Processor (2.5GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz DDR3)
The Dell Latitude E6420 has a 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor

Both of these are Sandy Bridge, right? Is one better than the other?

Thank you!

Greetings fellow Boilermaker…

Both being Sandy Bridge and all that it’s a close call. The 420s is a bit lighter. Check for various benchmark sides for i5-2520M versus i7 performance.

If you will not be carrying the thing around campus a lot, a 15" (6520 or T520 or even W520) may be a better value (smaller is not as good value :-))

If a lenovo thinkpad is one of your options, select it. Enough said. (unless its outdated, but this one’s hardware is up to date)
