Less CAL Grant with Sophomore Standing?

I am a first year student with Sophomore standing. I checked by CAL Grant status on CSAC and it says that they will only give it to me for 2.67 more years. (I go on a quarter system.) Everyone else on my floor has it for 3.67 more years. (They have freshman standing when they first matriculated).

Anyone else have this problem?

Is there a way to petition/complain, etc?

Thanks.

I go to a public university in California.

Hmm...I don't know. You're supposed to get it for at least four years. Are you a transfer student? Call the number on the WebGrants site and ask them about it.

I am a first year student, but I have Sophomore standing.

Okay, let me try that.

Yes, that could be the reason why.

Cal Grant recipients can receive no more than four years
of full-time grant payment. The actual number of terms of
payment you may receive will be based on your grade
level (year in college such as freshman, sophomore, etc.)
when you are first paid in the program. If you are first
paid as a second, third or fourth year student, you will not
receive a full four years of payment.

Does the last sentence imply that all first year students will get full four years payment regardless of class level?

Does the CSAC definition of Freshman mean 1st year student or does it mean one who has 0-45 quarter units (0-30 semester units)?

I don't think so. It says the number of terms you will be paid are based on your ** grade level (year in college such as freshman, sophomore, etc.) when you are first paid in the program**.

Sounds as if you do not get the full 4 years if you are first paid at Sophomore level or above.

You should probably check that this still applies if your Sophomore level standing is because of APs etc.

Thanks for everyone's reply.

Should I contact my school's financial aid office or CSAC?

CSAC won't reply until after a week. I will contact my school's financial aid office for more information and post here later to help other people who are in the same boat as I am.

Thanks.
