I put post it notes on things I’m planning to use for a meal. Otherwise…they get eaten.
What?! You don’t live by your old Rolodex? I’d be lost without mine. Where would I find the number to Blockbuster?
I admit I did take a walk down memory lane to see what who was in there. I used to have access to some famous people. Anyone want contact info for Lance Armstrong?
Well, I didn’t really get organized today, but I did go through my clothing and shoes. It was rather disappointing on a couple of levels: 1) took me much longer than I expected, and 2) for as much as I got rid of (about three and a half tall kitchen garbage sack fulls), I can’t really notice a discernible difference. Since it took so long, I didn’t get to the organizing part. I really think I need some dividers for my drawers. I also struggle with what to hang and what to fold. My preference is hanging, but our closet isn’t huge, and I share with dh (though my portion is bigger). Oh, I also cleaned out everything in the vanity. Discarded several items. So, at least my bedroom and bath are ready to be organized.
I truly wanted to accomplish more today, but I suppose something is better than nothing.
Any progress is progress! Sounds like you accomplished a lot.
I have actually done that too - but it takes more effort and sometimes I forget - a bin sounds more effective and more concrete for him to remember!
It’s worth folding Maria Kondo’s way. At least when I did my drawers had twice as much room and looked neater as well.
I think it’s good to consider the Kondo ideas and adapt as it woks for the individual. I do like tshirts organized so they’re upright rather than in a stack so you can have a better view of your clothing than when they’re just in a pile.
I also agree that folks need an organizational system that works for them and that they’re happy with.
I use something similar to this to store extra linens, pillows and comforters.

I only keep enough towels for usage. When I buy new towels I throw away old.
I have a lot of coats and I would like to get rid some, but my problem is every time I have gotten rid a coat it is always the one that I wish I still had.
I don’t like the Marie Kondo way of folding shirts. I guess it depends on your clothing, but I have a lot of different shirts in similar colors. The way she folds I would have to unfold each shirt to see which one it was. I like to fold like stores do so it’s a nice neat rectangle that displays the front so you can just flip through them easily. My husband folds his shirts in half. Drives me crazy, but he does his and I do mine.
This article was in my inbox this morning. I agree with a couple of things - well more than a couple but a couple stand out:
- Organizing isn’t a one and done.
- Take things out of their original packaging to save room
I saw an example of #2 by someone I follow on Instagram who was doing a whole week of organizing. Once she took her light bulbs, batteries, extension cords - stuff like that - out of original packaging she gained TONS of room!
I have a lot of wires and plugs under my desk. I put them in a basket so they look tidier. When I vacuum I just lift the basket instead of fighting with wires.
I can get behind this on some things, but I struggle doing it with food. At least with doing it for all food. How do you keep up with expiration dates? And then, when you are about to run out but not quite out you buy the next package and then you have to store that in addition to the container that you can see into. I don’t have that kind of space. But, for things like protein bars or wrapped chocolates or things like that, I do get it.
I think the tips on waiting until the end of your purging and making sure you measure are valuable, too.
I like things in their original boxes if it’s cereal or something like that. My husband will take something out, but then I’m left wondering if it’s Honey Nut Cheerios or regular Cheerios because he doesn’t label stuff and I think it looks better in the box anyway. Looks untidy out of the box to me.
But I do always put flour and rice and sugar and pantry staples like that in clear glass jars.
I can’t see doing that with things like cereal, but I always do it with things like toothpaste, saline, eye drops, blistex… I buy backups before I run out, but when I need something, I hate getting it out of boxes and peeling off protective seals, etc. So I do that right as I get home and am unpacking groceries anyway.
Oh I don’t think it applies to food in general - more like the things mentioned - light bulbs, batteries, other things non- food that have a lot of packaging and getting rid of the packaging is not a detriment to the product or your use of it.
I minimize my paper documents, both for work and personal. I digitalize almost all of my paperwork and I organize them in my file folders. I get annoyed when any companies send me stuff in the mail. I purge my tax returns whenever I can. My apartment is a lot less cluttered without a lot of paper and all of those files are accessible no matter where I am in the world.
Thanks for the quiz! Apparently I’m a ladybug.
As I get closer to finishing a huge family project that has taken every weekend - I cannot wait to dive into triaging and getting rid of so much stuff!! Then I’ll return here to figure out how to organize the remainder!
Yep…how about this one…when baking Christmas cookies, a friend handed me a container of powdered sugar to roll the 100 or so Russian Tea Cakes in….well…guess what? Her husband had put flour in that container instead…
Whatever you do, don’t follow TheHomeEdit on IG. Those ladies organize everything with an abundance of specialize plastic containers for folks who have gargantuan pantries and closets. And they’re like “It’s so easy to be organized - look!” Sure, if I had a 2000 sf closet it would be lovely!
They also “decant” all the pantry stuff into plastic containers, so all the pasta, rice, cereal, snacks, etc are all in identical containers. That seems like such a waste of time, plus where do you store the back-up/next box of spaghetti? Plus, expiration dates, nutrition info etc.
I really should unfollow them
