I like that, momofboiler1! I guess it’s the ladybug in me (stuff hidden away)?
I follow a designer on YouTube who recommends the same thing for the primary bathroom - instead of having all the frequently used stuff in a medicine cabinet (where it tumbles out) or jumbled under the sink - have very wide, pull-out drawers (segmented) where you can easily access it all. Love that concept.
When I watch shows with all matching spice jars, storage jars, etc I simply love the look. But I doubt my Ladybug soul will ever get there. LOL Maybe when I retire!
I actually am fine with different size and shape spice jars, which is a good thing because that’s what I currently have. They mostly fit nicely in the racks on the door of our pantry (except for the mega-Costco restaurant sized plastic containers, which thankfully we don’t have many of).
I actually have gained more of those Costco sized spice containers and honestly the ones I have (garlic powder, cinnamon, red pepper flake, parsley, paprika) I use OFTEN.
Your spice drawer looks a lot like mine. I don’t care about having matching containers because I find it easier to grab what I want when it’s obvious that the McCormick Montreal Steak seasoning looks different from the Penzeys chicken taco seasoning or the Kroger/Publix store brands. I’m also too lazy to transfer three dozen or more spices into new containers and then make labels.
Yup, D recently bought the Truffle Parmesan salt and us quite fond of it. She bought that and garlic salt. Sadly with our HI humidity, it’s is harder to keep it properly flowing-tends to clump. Argh!
I’m not sure this qualifies as organizational, but something I did for my DS was to clean and save a bunch of Talenti Gelato containers. I filled them with stuff he could use in the kitchen like turbinado sugar, dark chocolate chips, kosher salt, raisins/dried fruit, nuts, etc. It’s been good since he’s lived in a different apartment every year and they’re easy to move.
My DD (who’s 2 yrs older, more into aesthetics and has spent consecutive yrs in the same place) was gifted glass mason jars for the same purpose. Both are good for keeping out possible pests. (And not that it’s important I keep demitasse espresso spoons inside each.)
I am amazed by the number of different spices you all have. Do you use them all? I have like 5 spices that I use regularly. They sit on a lazy susan in the upper cabinet next to the stove with a bunch of other stuff I want handy (vinegar, my sugar shaker, etc.)
We do use all of ours, but I posted on the Expired products in your closet thread that some of mine were from the Carter administration.
Because our food, spices, and condiments rotate so regularly, I pay no attention to expiration dates and never label them. Some of those packet mixes, though…
My guess would be that I have 30+ spices??? I’d have to count. Everything from cream of tartar (just used for Christmas baking) to dill weed (use for homemade ranch dressing and whenever I don’t have fresh dill which is whenever it’s not summer) to the fall spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin pie, cloves, etc. ) to herbs to salts…it goes on and on!!
I use all of mine. Having grown up in the Foreign Service, I’ve eaten from a variety of different cuisines all my life. I love Indian food (tons of spices and spice mixes) and Middle Eastern food (some overlap). I spent a year in France and five in Germany and of course Italian food is yummy too.
I use most of my extensive spice collection- but confess that a 35 year old bottle of 5 Spice powder just ended up in the trash. It had the price tag on it- from a grocery store in a city I lived in 7 or 8 moves ago, and when I opened the jar it smelled like… nothing. Pure and clean nothing.
I originally bought these spice racks to display son’s math and French contest trophies and ribbons. Our previous house had a large spice cupboard built into the wall leading into the kitchen. Now the most meaningful trophies etc. are stored in the garage, and the spice racks can be what they were designed to be.
Re olds spices, husband recently said he needed more powdered ginger. I thought, hmm, and found an old pouch that was part of a gift my mom had brought us from a (probably not the Spice Islands) cruise maybe 20 years ago. Husband said it was fine.
In upper cabinets, coated wire risers to divide some of the space at bottom shelf (that I can reach best)
On pantry door, a nice organizer unit from THe Container store. The. bracket and bins cost over $100, but it is very helpful. We actually have a fairly big pantry, but stuff was getting lost on the deep shelves. It’s easy to see in a glance if we need more soup, pasta sauce etc
In pantry, I have a 2 drawer plastic unit (each drawer about 14x1114 Top drawer has everything we receive regarding taxes
