I'm applying to several UC's (Riverside, Irvine, San Diego) and private colleges in southern cali (Pitzer, Occidental, Pepperdine) in hopes of getting in for the fall of 2015.

I'll get straight to the point...my SAT score is terrible. The highest score I got is 1640. However, my ACT is somewhat better (28). If I JUST send in my ACT SCORE of 28 to the UC's and private colleges and I don't even BOTHER sending in my SAT score, will I get rejected? I know that SAT and ACT is just one part of the admissions process but still...what do you guys think? And there's a myth going around that west coast prefers SAT over ACT...what do you guys think about this too?

Same here, my SAT score is pretty bad, but i haven’t gotten my ACT score back yet so I’ll see if I can fall back on that. After researching different colleges, I’ve noticed that some tend to only super score the SAT, not the ACT, so I guess there is a slight bias for the SAT. In my opinion, it’s really based upon the specific college, but i doubt that not sending in your SAT scores would get you rejected. Most people only send in their better scores anyway, so you’re not alone.

zen: you should just send the ACT. It’s a myth about schools preferring one over the other. They prefer qualified students. And will use whatever tools at hand to determine that. Anyone can go and use a conversion table. really.

There is no reason for any school to prefer one test over the other one if they want qualified students. Nevertheless, each school may have different emphasis in section scores and have a different score conversion chart.

There is only one college in California that actually prefers one test over the other, and that is Cal Poly SLO. It prefers the ACT. You can submit your ACT to ones you mention. Be aware that if you do otherwise and submit both, all those you mention have a policy of using that test which is considered higher to determine admission.

It’s personal preference. Some people prefer the SATs, others like the ACTs. I took both and sent both in to all my schools because a lot of schools want the SATs, but I felt I did better on the ACTs. Marist College is one of many schools who are test optional so you don’t have to send either!

I have actually heard the opposite- the east coast is a bigger fan of the SAT, while the west prefers the ACT. however, nowadays both tests are very accessible to everyone, so pretty much every school will accept either one.

I have never heard of a case where someone was rejected from any college simply because they sent in a particular test over the other one. If a school accepts both, they shouldn’t have any ulterior motive to reject you if you send a certain one in.
