let's call

yeah - with all due respect to menloparkmom, the tone of the post did sound somewhat condescending, and i admit if she'd replied to my inquiry stating that the letter in question was in fact the one received by all of us yesterday, my reply to her would probably have been a touch harsh.

I think the problem was with "FYI?" If so, FYI doesn't carry the same meaning as "for your information." FYI is used all the time in emails, message boards etc. and it's not considered rude.

Still, clarifying with menloparkmom, would be more productive than attacking her.

i don't think the problem was with FYI by itself as much as it was with FYI coupled with the fact that the email in question was thought to be one redistributed to all applicants, and that she had gathered incorrect information from it. generally, given stanford's now trademark ambiguity given dates, be it for application release, or admission decision, any concrete stance on stanford's dates seems a bit too concrete to me.

Matt, its ur fellow ssp homie Jason!
yeah, i agree that the lady's post was a little bit condescending, but after i read ur post, i felt a little sorry for her...
even though its a forum made for students, we get some of our best info from parents. you're right, the "fyi" made her sound fairly pompous, but i think we should just let that slide
she probably just wants to help. i mean, if she wanted to be rude, i think she would have said something like, "You kids are all wrong, my son received a special e-mail from Stanford (because hes special) telling him that they would send out notifications on the 15th, and no earlier. All of you might as well give up on ur dreams, because stanford would never accept kids as uninformed and stupid as all of you are!!"

something like that

well thats that, gl to u matt, and everyone else who applied early

Her post is not condescending... there's just not enough there to take it all the way there... I would agree that FYI tends to have a negative connotation but nothing excuses being so rude over something so incredibly minor. I would hope that some of you are just stressed out because I would hate to see someone treat others like that everyday.

I would feel really weird though if my mom or dad were on CC

Does the Stanford Admission Office work on Saturdays? If so, does anybody know if they're sending out decisions today? Thanks :)

I read this on the Daily Pennsylvanian, but it is true for others schools that all Early letters are thin envelopes, and it's only during RD that they send the thick envelopes with housing info and masters and stuff?

They're not open today....this is from the site:

Office Hours:
The Office of Undergraduate Admission is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Pacific Time, except on major holidays and during the winter University closure.

...darn.

So you think it'll be Monday?

Most likely.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....wail of despair They said the 15 - it's got to be 15th! got to! and they've got way more apps than any other Ivy. HAS to be the 15th!!!!!

now I'm so upset I can't even enjoy manga properly.

Why do you want the 15th?!

NOOO!! I want it to be the 12th, so I can have more time to let my pain go away when I get my deferral/rejection

1) I faxed them something on the 5th that can seriously affect my chances (switch from intl to domestic), and I hope they will have enough time to [re]consider it
2) I just don't want to know :D. I dunno, it's a love/hate relationship, but I just don't want to have to put up with a full week of people asking me 'did you get in? did you GET IN???!?!?!?' lol. avoidance syndrome, I guess.

GF - you won't have any pain. You're a Princeton fanboy :p, lucky duck.

Same here. The worst part is having to email my old teachers (who wrote my recs and reassured me I'd get in) and telling them the not-so-good news.

oh yeah, the thank-you cards. I've also been putting it off - I figured I'll wait just before the holidays, so I can give them a present therefore write less words on the card. Hopefully they don't remember where I applied.

I was so surprised when my GC checked off "best in my career" for my Character/Personality category :D:D:D.

I just sent my presents yesterday. Hope they don't get lost in the mail. What's weird is that I asked my US History teacher to write 4 recs and he said that was way too many, but I asked my English and Math teachers to write ten each and they were happy to do it. Then again, my history teacher has always been a little odd. :D

By the way, how did you find out what your GC checked?

our GC department mail all the teacher recs + gc recs + transcripts + brag sheets + any other gunk together in one huge envelope, so out of expediency the GCs give the huge stack of papers to the students to make sure the packets are complete before they sent it out. Well, since I had to flip through a dozen of them, I can't help but 'glimpse' some of the ratings :).

There were some contradictions though - one teacher rated me Average for working with others. doh, we never had a group project in trig so what can one expect, and rated me Excellent on personality. and another teacher rated me Average for warmth personality (which is more accurate, but hey that doesn't make me happy as the GC's :D). The checkmarks for Academics were pretty good - in Excellent range. They've offered to show me their letters of rec, which are pretty nice, since I asked for them in summer, just after I passed the finals with flying colors (strategic planning on my part).

ps) what did you buy for your teachers? I can't think of anything but Christmas candles (they're very cute though)

I really want to know what my teachers put...hopefully, nothing below average. I don't really have a warm personality but hopefully my dedication will make up for it. I guess I made pretty good impressions on my math teacher since I was famous/infamous for getting hundred percents on her notoriously hard tests. As for English, well since I was the only Asian in her class, she always thought that I brought a lot of diversity to the class, so I hope she'll write good things about my characters and personality.

I sent pins (the ones thats goes on your shirt or sweater, not needles) to my English and Math teachers (who are both females) and I sent small crystals to my Physics and History teacher (they have little designs in them that are really cool). Which teachers are you having to write your recs?
