Let's clear this for once and for all: Preppy vs. Trendy

who here is from westchester, I'm from chappaqua. yeah sure people dress nice but i mean everyone is cool.

i think a lot of people mix preppy with trendy. Right now, actually, preppy is trendy. The people in my school who wear Abercrombie, ae, hollister, juicy, etc, are considered preppy(like me), even though those clothes are trendy right now and not exactly preppy when you compare them to Polo and other stores that are actually preppy. But of course, California is nowhere near as preppy as the East, so the trendy people will be deemed preps.

I think you're interpreting "preppy" as a state of mind when it is more of a style of dress. For instance, "Having Roman numerals after your name" has nothing to do with dressing preppy or being preppy. Popped collars, on the other hand, is the cornerstone of the prep style. Anyway, how is polo ambiguous? It's the epitamy of preppiness. You can't pop your collar without a polo shirt :)

when it comes to chics..i just love how the chics in the village dress..funky..different..really creative..really hot..thats what i call hot..and stylish..like they just put an outfit together..without a care..no thought put into it..yet looks so hot

Burberry

Burberry is not ambiguous. it is not preppy. it is chav, which is most definitley NOT preppy.

or maybe it's just cause I'm an anglophile

Certain brands can definitely be labeled preppy. But I think it is really the way in which the person wears the clothes that would make it preppy or another stereotype style. For instance, someone can wear red hightop Converse chucks with Fubu jeans (improvising here) a matching red shirt and red cap, etc.. etc... and that could be considered r&b and/or hip-hop.

Then someone could wear those same red hightop Converse chucks, dirty them up, wear faded jeans, a white polo shirt and a sweater vest on top and be labeled preppy/punk (I'm not familiar with labels, but I'm sure you get my point).

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that Ralph Lauren can be labeled a preppy brand, but if really comes down to the way the person will wear it.

does it really matter?

1--doesnt really matter
2--i agree with mallory..lacoste use ot be preppy b4 but now its become a part of urban wear..okay tata

OMG, are boxers preppy or not preppy?!!?!?!!11111

ah, you see, it depends -- are they burberry or lacoste?

what is your definition of "jappy" vs. "preppy"?

who cares? stop with the labeling...and if you guys were preppy at all you'd realize that preppy is a state of mind, not a dress code...check out the Preppy Handbook, its hilarous mainly because its true.

and don't forget fratty
a subcategory of preppy

well here abercrombie is the definition of preppy...of course no one here is actually wealthy or goes to boarding schools anyways, but preppy really is more a state of mind. I mean, first, you have to be popular, but that's not to say all popular people are preppy. It's just a way about you, I can't quite explain it

Rasberry -- Westchester and the North Shore of Long Island ARE preppy, other than that your list is very accurate. The North Shore of Long Island breeds the best lacrosse players in the nation. Scarsdale is more JAP but as a whole (Westchester) is preppy. Abercrombie is definitely NOT preppy. But Polo/Patagonia/Vineyard Vines/J. Press/Brooks Brothers are.

Here's a pretty complete list of preppy locations (according to wikipedia):
Andover, Massachusetts
Bar Harbor, Maine
Block Island
Bronxville, New York
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Cape Cod
Chappaquiddick Island
Charleston, South Carolina
Charlottesville, Virginia
Darien, Connecticut
Fairfield County, Connecticut
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
The "Gold Coast"
Greenwich, Connecticut
Grosse Pointe
Hanover, New Hampshire
Hyannisport, Massachusetts
Kennebunkport, Maine
Martha's Vineyard
Nantucket
New England
Newport, Rhode Island
New Canaan, Connecticut
North Shore (Long Island) ---> the south shore is not preppy
Rye, New Hampshire
*
* Westchester County ***
Weston, Connecticut
Upper East Side

the PREPPPIEST you can get is J.CREW!!

HAHAHA. They are the definition of "pure prep" !!

they are SO preppy that it's seriously overly done,

www.JCrew.com

i work at J. Crew lol.

J. Crew can be preppy but isn't on the same level as Polo, Brooks Brothers, etc.

haha J. Crews stuff is ugly as all hell - who in their right mind would wear some of that crap? Its surprising that preppy-ness is associated with wealth, yet it is seriously some of the tasteless stuff.... exhibit A: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod69199741&catId=cat70908 lol
I'm an Armani/Banana republic and spread collar/french cuff/square toe/etc. kinda guy - sure, expensive taste, but hey it looks good :)

madras shorts are great for golfing or lounging around the country club. they are extremely preppy. armani and banana republic aren't preppy and try to appeal more to the metrosexual audience. not that one style is better than another, they are just different looks.

not that one style is better than another

well, stuff like clothing styles is only a matter of personal opinion. So in a sense, yes one style is better than another... to me.
