Hi Everyone! Here's yet another topic that's been troubling me...

Concern #1:For the subject tests, I've always heard that it's best that you take 3+.

However, after checking the requirements of colleges I want to apply to, I've noticed that many, if not all, ask only for 2 subject tests (if you know colleges that ask for 3 or more, can you please list them?). On top of that, they usually state that only the best two scores will be evaluated. So, will 2 good scores be actually enough?

Concern #2: I read somewhere that retaking 2 (or more) subject tests is too much and a definite no-no.

I retook my 790 Math II and got a 800 the second time (I thought that I wanted to major in something math related) and was planning on retaking my 720 US History (have no interest in history at all, but just finished APUSH so decided to just get another subject test in). If I were to retake US history, would it look bad?

Question: I am for sure going to take the SAT II in Biology (I'm confident that i'll get a good score on this one). With my Math II good to go and Biology, should I even retake US History, if I won't be doing anything history related in my future AT ALL? I'm interested in applying to Ivy League schools.

Sorry for the rambling. Thanks for all the help!

It’s usually recommended to take 2-3 subject tests. Nowadays, the colleges that require subject tests only require 2, so in most cases, 2 scores will suffice. In some specific instances, e.g. if a student is applying to NYU using subject tests (instead of the SAT I, ACT, or AP tests), then the student will need 3 or more subject tests.

just wondering… if you do take a SAT subject test twice, do you have to send both results to the college you’re applying to or just the highest one?

You can just send the highest one if the school allows Score Choice. If the school doesn’t allow Score Choice, then you have to send all of your scores. Be careful, though as some schools, like Stanford, allow Score Choice for SAT II scores but not SAT I scores.

do you have a list (or a link) for which ones score choice and which ones don’t?

Only a handful or less schools require 3 subject tests. Many do recommend taking more than 2 though. Having two or 3 subject tests with great scores are definitely enough for most if not all school applications. Regarding retaking SAT2, I don’t think there is any set rule. However, it is not likely to get much improvement if you did prepare the first attempt properly. You should take the subject test that you are most confident with presumably right after taking the AP or at least the honor classes when the materials are still fresh in mind. Unlike SAT1 that you are most like to get an improved score in the second attempt, SAT2 retake would go either way. After all, for any standardized tests, you should prepare for it as it would be your last attempt. You really don’t want to retake it unless it is really necessary. There are a lot more to do for school applications than just getting the test scores.
