Let's Do This Peacefully

can i ask you all a favor? rank these schools according to a.) the easiest to get into as a transfer student entering junior year and b.) the most prestigious. take note: keep in mind that the major im considering is either political science or business management... just in case some of you say "it depends on what school you plan to enter.
1st group of schools:
brown, cornell, columbia, and darthmouth.
2nd group of schools:
nyu, notredame, georgetown, duke, and usc.
thanks good looking people. haha i hope i dont start a riot among students of these conflicting universities. LATERS.

i can only tell you about the first group (imo of course)

prestige (high to low): columbia; brown/dartmouth; cornell

ease of acceptance (easy to hard): cornell; brown; dartmouth; columbia

i'll tell you about the 2nd group (imo also)

prestige (high to low):
duke, nyu-stern, georgetown, notre dame, usc

ease of acceptance (easy to hard):
usc, notre dame, georgetown, nyu-stern, duke

Prestige -
Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Brown, Cornell, Notre Dame U, NYU, Georgetown = USC.

Getting in -
Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, Cornell, UND, NYU, USC and Georgetown!

cool, people. keep giving your rankings until a clear pattern surfaces.

Real world prestige:
Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, NYU (more recognition than Notre Dame definintely), Georgetown, Notre Dame U

martinibluex: what made you think about your rankings?

I'm not understanding how NYU's Stern is more prestigious than Georgetown McDonough nor that Duke is less prestigious than Dartmouth lol.

Dartmouth/Duke/Columbia are equivalent
Brown
Cornell
Georgetown
Notre Dame/NYU
USC

This can work for both categories. Most top 15 colleges are very close anyway, so it's hard to distinguish among them. The other four are also relatively close, but I think Georgetown is the most selective, and maybe tied with NYU on prestige.

what does real world prestige translate into?

duke is bad. georgetown cannot offer anything besides int'l relations and a couple of other majors. no famous science, mathematics, or any other department for that matter. useless for finding employment outside the area. it's a blah school. go there to do some silly social science or humanities major if you can't do science and if you can't do better. NYU has stronger academics and good math department. real world means even though Georgetown is 25 and NYU is 37, NUY students will always have it made better than G-town ones.
and duke is just bad. I can't believe that you even compare it to Dmouth.
P.S. cornell after brown? what is wrong with you? for people going to cornell, NYC has job offers before they even graduate

"The common consensus is that Duke, Brown, and UPenn should be removed from the ivy league, which is silly but it gives you an idea. Brown is weak, Duke is weak, and UPenn is weak except the business school."

This obviously says a lot about you and your sources, duke isn't an ivy.

Besides the dude said:

"take note: keep in mind that the major im considering is either political science or business management..."

Firstly, I'll be damned if G-town isn't superior to NYU in political science.

Then on to a more 'controversial' subject which has to do with stern and mcdonough, and for this I think you should see the first and last pages of the following thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=75179&page=1&pp=20

That should speak for itself concerning job prospects. If in IBanks its made better for georgetown students its better for them anywhere.

Yeah you are right. I saw "rank" and got overzealous. I removed UPenn from the quoted statement because I like the school.
To the OP: please feel free to disregard my stupid posts. I have had 1 hour of sleep last night and I only come here when the writer's block takes over so I can get flustered and passionate and be able to resume with my application essays.

Haha, I totally disagree with martini. I know plenty of alums from these schools and Duke is clearly in category one. Not even questionable. Also Brown often gets slightly more prestige points than Cornell, its not such a shocker. Not a great difference however.

Here's my list:

Prestige:
Category 1 (in order of prestige):
1) Columbia/ Dartmouth/ Duke/ Brown, 2) Cornell
Category 2 (in order of prestige):
1) NYU Stern/ Georgetown, 2) Notre Dame, 3) USC/ NYU (College)

In order of transfer difficulty:
1) Columbia, 2) Duke/ Dartmouth, 3) Brown, 4) Cornell, 5) Georgetown, 6) NYU Stern, 7) Notre Dame, 8) USC, 9) NYU College

In terms of political science department quality/ranking/creamy center goodness (from best to worst in each tier):

First tier: Columbia and Duke
Second tier: Cornell, NYU, Georgetown
Third tier: Brown, Dartmouth, USC
Fourth tier: Notre Dame

No, I don't hate Notre Dame. No, I don't think that Columbia and Duke are all that and a bag of chips. No, I don't think that those rankings are based on selectivity.

But, those are basically the tiers that I'd imagine most political scientists would place them in.

Then I'm sorry, but you're damned. NYU Stern is consistently considered a better political science department than GTown. NYU is particularly stronger in terms of PhD graduate placements. Just look at the NYU placements vs. the GTown placements, and you can get a basic feel for the strength of NYU's program.

Funny how kids who go to the big state schools are always ranking graduate departments. It has a little to do with undergrad, but not that much at all. Many prefer a highly ranked school with undergrad focused departments. You get ten times the attention and alumni networking.

Frddy - NYU-Stern is most definitely more prestigous than Georgetown-McDonough

Agreed. Although conversely Georgetown College is much more prestigious than NYU (College).

lol. does georgetown even have a math department?
