Since the release of the May SATi/ii scores, I've seen an influx of questions regarding the competitiveness of scores and whether or not they're up to par with Ivies, top tier schools, or just good schools in general. While everyone has a different standard and a different goal--i think we should turn this into a formal discussion.

Many will say "730! oh man... i need that 800"

The rebuttal will be "you're warped, you collegeconfidential junkie! that's fine for the ivies"

A third voice will sound "I only got a 650"

A friend will say "That's still really good!"

"Idk... others are shooting for the 800"

Come one come all...answer the question of competitiveness. When doing so--set the type of school that would be targeted and your opinion of scores

does SAT score really weigh that much in applications for Ivies? I thought that as long as one's score is the median range, the colleges don't not pay too much attention to . It only matters if it is extremely high or extremely low.

but that's the question, what is extremely high and extremely low?

I hope you are right alwaysfaithful because otherwise I am really screwed.......

OK....QUESTION:

Is 770 US History and 680 Biology "good" for Cornell?

the us history is good, the bio might need retake

i think the median range for ivies would probably be between 2350-2100 ( considering that the new sat has pretty huge score, the range might be big too). the colleges might consider it more when the score falls below 2100 or is higher than 2350.

i agree with hyper--especially since cornell is more of science school and if you want to major in a science--they'd get giddy with a 700+ science satii

k, how about this... 800/750/740... but a 690 physics score?

oh the others are math II, bio, chem

Cujoe, most schools only look at the top two-to-three scores anyway.

oh man...retake bio....thats harsh.....i cant in june cus of sat, i cant in october cus of sat....and november...im planning for math

In all reality. is a 680 that detrimental? Considering im doing ED plus i have just amazing leadership and extracurriculars....

holy cow! only 12 days until sat ii's! i haven't even bought any review books. Can't believe it snuck up on me like that.

Hm, not sure about the SAT, but what's a competitive ACT score?

For Ivies, a competetive ACT score should be 32+.

I'd say if you want to be a competitive Ivy applicant you need 2150+ SAT and 700+ SAT 2's

pentasa, then could you explain why all (most) tier schools have a range of 27-33 on their websites? I'm not really clear.

i agree....from my knowledge...its 28-32

See those statistics are misleading. Sure, the medians seem much lower than their correlating SAT ones, but only a small fraction of applicants actually submit an ACT score.

So the median SAT for penn is 1380-1500, for 97% of students.
The median ACT is 28-33, for 22% of students.

Many of these applicants, especially ones that scored very strongly on their initial SAT, ONLY took the SAT, and therefore they have no ACT scores to bump the median up.

However, take this with a grain of salt, due to the ambiguity of "competetive." Just as I would say a 32+ would be competitive, I would say the same for 1440+. While a 30 or 31 or a 1380-1440 would certainly not be bad scores, they would make it necessary that your transcript is much stronger in other areas, such as GPA, SAT II, APs.
