Post what your ethnicity is, and if it has affected your decision to go to medical school. This is to get an approximate idea of how much being asian actually changes your life. Some people are affected heavily, and others are just like everyone else. Let's see once and for all.

Asian. Not at all. My parents tried to convince me not to become a doctor. But, it intrigued me, so they respected my decision.

I am Asian, but my parents never pushed me into medicine or any career, for that matter.

Is this a common thing? My cousin goes to a medical school and the one time I went to visit, the student population appeared to be 95% white??

mah rentz said life is good being a doctor and it would suit my personality to interact w/ patients, so i looked into it, there was no force though. they said do something that you'll enjoy doing everyday and not somethiing you will hate and regret for the rest of your life.

aight im not gonna lie or anything im indian and both my rents are docs sooooo i kinda had some pressure to be one but as i experienced more i liked it more and more and now i dont mind being a doctor whatsoever hence my application to these med progs.

yea, I'm Indian too. go figure.

my dad is a doctor. I saw how much he succeeded in a short term of 4-5 years (my dad took the USMLE when he was over 30 b/c he used to practice in India, and he barely passed)

i've personally seen how much my dad has excelled in life in the short time he's been working as a full-fledged doctor (not a resident, but an attending) and it definitely influenced me to go into medicine.

Also, my family history on my father's side has a tradition going back a couple generations: half the brothers go to engineering, the other half go to medicine. My older brother has gone to mechanical engineering........ soooooooooo I'm left w/ medicine. again. go figure.

However, i do not feel 'forced' to go into medicine, but rather I know that is what I will be happy doing the rest of my life (at least above every other job). However, my parents may have objected if I tried to do something else (like poetry writing or some crap I suck at), but alas, like every other Indian out there, I was naturally gifted in math. and science. and relatively stupid in english. and social studies............

so there it is. i'm gonna be a doctor

hahahah.... great post Evilbooyaa

well it's all true..... so thanks I suppose haha

pretty much, i'm scared.
scared of applying to med school.
that's why i'm goin for ba/md

also, if i don't get into ba/md, i don't know what i'll do.

no one from my school has gotten into harvard (for anything) in the last 30 years.
NO ONE.
that's bad.
that's REALLY bad.

i'm indian and lets just say my parents explained the "benefits" of going into medicine. However, I genuinely like the profession and the nature of the work so I'm more than happy to go into it.

I'm Indian (my parents are from India anyway)... and my dad's a doctor. I know lots of doctors. I like medicine and the fusion of science and altruism. No pressure here either. My older brother went into business/real estate.

By the way, all of us Indians are 25% attracted to medicine because of our blood. Only 75% is our actual choice to do it. It's in our genes.

im Arabic (Syrian) and im the first in my entire family to go to college here in the U.S. i havent had any pressure into becoming a doctor, my parents just wanted me to excel in something i really loved. i was very intrigued by the field of medicine for many aspects (always learning, saving lives, gratitude from others, benefits, etc.) and so decided to stick with it. i would love it when every day i went to work someone would thank me for making their day that much better.

I am Indian as well (rents born their but instilled A LOT of culture) My mother is a non-practicing doctor doing business as is my father (business non-practicing engineer). My mom alwayz talked about the joys of medicine but totally no pressure here. I'm doing medicine becuase I truely love it.

Do you think that the Admissions people assume that Indians want to go to Med programs because of their parents?

Meaning, is it harder for Indians to convince the Med programs through essays/interview/etc that they truly want to be become a doctor, and it's not a parental influence.

lachicamorena, im sure some1 will disagree with me but i feel as if as soon as an indian walks in, they are already at a disadvantage b/c most adcoms think that its b/c of the 'rents that they're here.....so, in answer to your question, i feel like it is a ltl harder to convince them that yes we're here sincerely b/c we want to "help ppl"....so yeah

I'm telling you, it's in our genes.

rrr. that's so annoying.

I hate when I ask an Indian what they want to do, and they're like "well, my parents really want me to go to med school..."

They give us a bad name. ha.

I am Irish - you know that little island getting it's ass kicked by England. My parents really want me to go into business and try to become a big Wall Street guy. When I told them I might want to become a doctor, they told me "are you crazy- the only people in med school are asians and jews!"

I live in New York suburb and have never actually met an Irish doctor, so it is my dream to become an Irish doctor. lol.

lol mike99 i like that story hopefully adcoms will too...g/l man!
