Let's have a laptop thread of our own!

I am planning to buy an apple ibook. I have heard great reviews about it. I have never worked at a mac before, so this should be exciting. which computers are you guys/gals going for?

I'm still thinking over whether I'll need a laptop or not. I initially had the idea that most university students use laptops, but an aritcle on this site stated that few really do use laptops for note taking.

I'll be bringing my desktop computer to my dorm though

Do people on campus use macs at all? Suppose my prof e-mails me an assignment that is in .doc format(ms office), will i be able to view it on a mac? if not, then macs would be useless on a college campus.

Bruno, you can get MS Word for Macs. I am definitely going to get myself a nice 15" Powerbook before I leave for college.

I've heard from a Wellesley friend of mine that Macs are pretty popular with students in college town. She recommended I buy one there because a student electronics supply store there apparently offers AMAZING discounts on Macs, like 15-20%. Also, I'm going into either film or graphic design or both and Macs are equal to or arguably better in those fields than PC's, not to mention reliability.

So there's my 2cents for Mac, I'm planning on obtaining a shiny new Powerbook when I get to town.

Thanks for the info. So basically, after i get a mac, i should install ms office into it right? I am a little worried because the general opinion about dell PCs is that they won't last me six years (i dont plan to change notebooks till postgrad) and IBM is too costly. The affordable IBMs aren't really THAT good. So apple struck me as an excellent option.
I have never worked on a mac before, so i would just like to ask you guys, since the softwares available for macs is less than that available for windows, will macs pose too much of a problem? I am not worried if i'll be able to play games since i dont plan to run game CDs on my notebook.

Macs are reallllllllly popular here, I almost wish I got a Mac laptop before coming here. But I have one of the tiny Sony Viao's, which is great when I want to take it to lectures, cuz it's so light and small. But if I were to do it again, I'd get a tiny mac laptop. You can get awesome deals where if you get a laptop, you can get an iPod for only 50-100 more. And iPods are extremely popular as well. And macs are so much more reliable.

They just Crash Different size=-7[/size]. If you know what you're doing, Windows doesn't crash any more often than Mac OS does. Then again, if you know what you're doing, you aren't running Windows . . .

Don't get me started on iPods. Popularity doesn't determine a product's quality. Right off the bat, I can tell you that the iPod line's sound quality is far inferior to that of its competitors. If you know what you're doing . . .

You get an Archos.

I've heard Nomads are great as well.

I happen to <3 my iPod. Don't diss the iPod. kthanksbye

;-)

Check the prices at University Computers at BU. I believe you can do this online. Software is also very inexpensive purchased through University Computers. They carry both Mac and PC platforms. DS is getting a 15" powerbook to replace his PC desktop.
