Let's make a list of colleges with good financial aid without needing the non-custodial parent

The New School’s net price calculator at https://newschool.studentaidcalculator.com/welcome.aspx calculates a net price of $25,016 for a student at the Eugene Lang division receiving no merit scholarships but with an EFC of $0. So it is nowhere close to “good financial aid”.

Juilliard’s net price calculator at http://www.juilliard.edu/apply-audition/financial-aid-scholarships/net-price-calculator calculates a net price of $17,765 for a music student from a low income family. Better than The New School, but still not “good financial aid”.

FAFSA asks if the student is interested in work study.

UD’s Commitment to Delawareans:

“We pledge to meet the full demonstrated financial need – up to the cost of in-state tuition, fees, a stipend for books, and on campus room and board – of all Newark campus Delawareans who file the FAFSA by the deadline.” They also say their goal is that loans will be less than 25% of the cost.

And that is exactly what they have done. I was unaware that they included books but not other expenses in their calculation and when you take that into account they have met 100% of our need.

COA = $27,154 (1,500 estimated other expenses)

Pell = 3,965
Trustee Scholarship = 3,000
Need-Based On-Campus Grant = 9,150
Est. SCiP (Delaware scholarship) = 2,200
Loans 5,500
No work study

Remaining direct cost = $1,039. Add in the $800 for books and there is our $1,839 EFC.

I’m fairly sure UD is not need-blind and I’m also quite certain they do not admit DE kids with high need who have any kind of blemish on their record (which happened with my son). Other than a profound lack of ECs, my daughter has very good stats… 3.99 UW GPA, IB diploma candidate, 2100 SAT, and valedictorian.

You know…I think acceptance rate…and such should be considered here as well.

For example…acceptance to the Juilliard School is completely based on the strength of one’s audition. Without an acceptance…it doesn’t matter how generous…or not…their need based aid is. And to add to that…if you are a bassoon player, and the school has NO need for that instrumentation because they already have enough students for their ensembles…you will not be acceoted even with the strongest audition out there.

Same with schools like HYPSM and University of Chicago. Are you a very tippy too student with outstanding SAT or ACT scores and LOR and essays? Even with that…no guarantee you will be acceoted at these very generous schools.

So,what if they don’t want non-custodial parent info. Your ability to be accepted is the number ONE thing that needs to be considered.

^ Albright is probably the only one that can be considered a likely admit for a high stats kid and that also meets 100% of need without NCP info. It made D’s list mostly for that reason but it was a neat place. I am sure she’d have done well and gotten lots of individual attention. Also the only dining hall we toured that is open all day and offers unlimited swipes.
