So everyone talks about prestige of this school and that school. Everyone applying this year knows what I'm talking abou; Uncle Bob hears Duke and says WOW and Uncle Bill hears Dartmouth and says WOW. So if you had to rank these schools in order of prestige, how would you rank em?

Harvard
Yale
MIT
Stanford
Princeton
Duke
Penn
Williams
Swarthmore
Columbia
Dartmouth
Berkeley
Brown
Cornell

Here's my attempt:
1. Harvard
2. MIT
3. Yale
4. Princeton
5. Stanford
6. Berkeley
7. Duke
8. Dartmouth
9. Columbia
10. Williams
11. Penn
12. Brown
13. Cornell
14. Swarthmore

my bad, if ya wanna know people's opinion go for it=) didn't mean to be cynical, I just find it frustrating that peoples applicaiton decisions are clouded so much by "prestige"

Come on, I just think it's interesting that people from different backgrounds consider different schools to be a "big deal." Let's not be uptight; it's at least worth thinking about.

Each and every school on this list is prestigious, and it is kind of stupid to rank them in order of prestige. But I must say that if we go on reputation and acceptance rate, the big three Ivy's on this list are the toughest to get into.

I said that Harvard is the toughest to get into because it is the most overrated college in America. Then comes Princeton because of the rivalry academically between Princeton and Harvard on the rankings list (they are both tied at number one for national universities in US News And World Report). Thirdly comes Yale.

like people have said before, it depends on your region of the country. i live in upstate new york, so while harvard, yale, princeton are all well regarded, cornell would raise a lot more eyebrows than say Caltech, duke, and even stanford, at least in the small town I go to school in. I'm sure people living in northern suburban Illinois think Northwestern is the best school in the country. So yeah, the prestige of a school depends on the region.
