Let's make our own "prestige ranking"

"People put Duke so high. I would never turn down an IVY to go there. Most people go there to watch the basketball, but that's not a good reason."

This is patently untrue. I go to Duke and can tell you that most people came here over Harvard, Stanford, MIT etc because they like the color.

A proper ranking would be...

Harvard
MIT
Princeton
Stanford/Yale
Cornell, Columbia
Dartmouth, Brown, Upenn
Berkeley, Duke
U-chig, Caltech, Northwestern (all good schools, but not known)
UCLA, UMAA (michigan-ann-arbor)
Georgetown, Emory, WUSTL
UCSD, William+Mary,
Other UCs, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore (sorry, LACs are not a good as unis)

Science-oriented schools are always more prestigious than arts-schools....most of the Ivies are science+arts, so they obviously have an edge.

Actually golubb_u I think that's the reason some people prefer Stanford over Harvard, because Stanford Engineering is considered much, much better. These are the same types of people who think that undergrad is a place to learn something "meaningful" in terms of helping you get a career, though, so you might consider their bias.

"U-chig, Caltech, Northwestern (all good schools, but not known)"

yea i like how golubb_u pointed that out, because someone's prestige rankings is only limited to what he/she knows or has heard about. unfortunately, those three tend to be left out of many people's prestige rankings simply because they haven't heard of them, even though they are very respected in the academic world and are very tough to get into.

Interesting comment.......

Duke is a great school but in terms of just prestige, it is NOT at the same level as the better Ivies. When you think of Ivy League you think of super elite -- but with Duke?

Also, I agree that when you take other considerations into account, different schools are better for different people. People turn down H/Y/P all the time for schools like MIT, Columbia, etc.

morgan-

have u been recruited for soccer?

And I wonder why everyone rates UChicago so low. I think of that school as very prestigous.

maybe you just havent persuaded enough people... and who put Duke with the upper ivies CC?

Duke only does well in the USNews rankings. But nobody else puts it in evne the top dozen. I wonder why it does so well in USNews. It's like an IVY safety for everyone.

OKay i'm sick and tired of people bashing liberal arts colleges. that's just wrong. since you all are SO into these rankings, here are some LACs that made this one from princetonreview.com:

1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

2 Princeton University

3 California Institute of Technology

4 Yale University

5 Harvard College

6 University of Pennsylvania

7 Stanford University

8 Swarthmore College

9 Duke University

10 Columbia University - Columbia College

11 Georgetown University

12 Brown University

13 Pomona College

14 Amherst College

15 Dartmouth College

16 University of California-Berkeley

17 Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering

18 Harvey Mudd College

19 Emory University

20 UVA

mensa160, that's really untrue. 5th in the US News Rankings? That's like not even bronze! Besides there are lots of Ivy Safeties like Cornell, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, WUSTL, Georgetown University Pomona College Amherst College University of California-Berkeley Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering Harvey Mudd College Emory University UVA Brown Brown Brown and Cornell.

cornell penn brown dartmouth amherst are not safeties for anyone. give me a break.

you people are so arrogant. it's out of control.

yes redbull i have been recruited for soccer

not too heavily, and I have only been actually approached by a few schools, (northwestern, US coast guard academy, i think there was another one or two...)

most of the contact was initiated by me. I did not recieve an offer from Northwestern, partially because I did not continue the contact, etc...

people do not realize that a liberal arts COLLEGE is a lot smaller overall

a UNIVERSITY is made up of several colleges, etc... college of arts and sciences, college of engineering, college of human whatever...

because a UNIVERSITY has MORE colleges, it is obvious WHY they are more well known...
BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE WHO GO THERE! in other words, MORE ALUMNI!

Hmm you wonder why Duke is ranked so high by everyone?

Well it is VERY hard to get into

A friend with a 1490 and near perfect GPA was deffered.

People go to liberal arts colleges with the intent of having a smaller, more personal type of learning experience. There are others who want to, or end up attending small liberal arts colleges in large cities, for the combination of both types of environments.

i have a butload of homework or I would take the time to continue my thoughts.

it seems to me as if what people write on here is not actualy read, people just reiterate their points without thinking of what others say, or considering the possibilities.

yeah i have too. are you looking to play D1 or D3

ReDbUll298 perception=reality.

The following schools are not safeties for anyone when we enter the "CollegeConfidential zone".

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
Cal Tech

everything else has been used as a safety. Dartmouth? Most people at my elite prep school would rather go to Brown! Duke? Reach...if you're an NBA player! Amherst? That's a PUBLIC SCHOOL! Cornell accepts mules! Penn has a sign on their gates "if you can spell Happy Valley, you're admitted (dictionaries allowed)."

What you have just seen may have frightened you, enlightened you, even tightened you. If you turn back now, you will just escape it's magnetic pull. Your knowledge of what really goes on in college admissions has granted you a pardon. But if you should ever meet the US News Ranking, you had better think non-prestigious thoughts. Anything more ignorant than that is handled at your own risk. Because if you do meet the US News Rankings you can be sure of one thing. You have entered the "CollegeConfidential" zone.

redbull ignore him/her

i think it is a him because girls are usually nicer

thats why i like em ;-)

anyways...

I am not really looking to play DI

i have been accepted to Saint Louis University and they offered 11k a year merit (not soccer) I also applied to UC Davis (i dont like the soccer coach though), Santa Barbara isn't my style. UC Santa Cruz is D3, Macalester and Vassar are D3, Cal Poly is DI, but that is pretty much my last choice. Tulane unfortunately doesn't have a team.

I probably am not good enough to play for SLU. I would really like to continue to play, so that is part of the reason why I like vassar and macalester

if you have any more questions private message me or make a new topic somewhere. this is a bit off the subject

ignore me?
