"Let's Put A Smile on That Face"...By Chancing Me

My stats are horrible compared to other kids on this site. Because I went to a rigorous private international school in Shanghai, China for freshman and sophomore years.

GPA: 2.7 (I’m going to explain in my essays, the hardships I had to endure. Found out mom was mentally ill, parents were trying to divorce several times, counselor we'll explain in her rec. she said) Upward grade trend, however.
SAT: 1850
ACT: 26 (will retake and most likely getting 28 or 29)
AP Classes: Economics, English Language, US History, Physics, Government, Psychology, Statistics, and English Literature
ECs:
Volunteer at hospital
Volunteer at library
MUN (Attended 3rd largest conference, BEIMUN)
JV Basketball
JV Volleyball
Varsity Tennis
Intern at Intel
Spanish club
ISEF
Drama club
Started own business
Taught English to poverty stricken Chinese kids
Yunnan Education Project (Built schools, homes, and water pipes for villages in Yunnan Province)
Coached and ref. basketball games for little kids (should i include this?)

Awards:
Rising Young Actor Award, 2006
JV Volleyball, 2nd place in state 2007
Volleyball SISAC All Star 2007
Best Resolution Regarding Zimbabwe 2007

X-Factors:
Lived in a booming market. Shanghai for 2 years.
Can speak conversational Chinese
Good rec. from physics/AP physics teacher
Good essays

Colleges:
University of Texas - Arlington
Oklahoma State (Legacy, uncle is a professor still)
Arizona State
UNC - Charlotte
University of Oregon (In-State)
Indiana University - Bloomington
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (ED?)
Texas A&M - College Station
North Carolina State

You should definitely contact the coaches at some schools about your volleyball skills :) It might give you an edge.

I'm not really familiar with the schools, but I'm pretty sure that if you convey your hardships in your essays extremely well, you sats should be high enough to where you get into most of them.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the colleges on your list but I agree with what hopeful2468 said. Get your SATs up and in your personal statement, strongly emphasize what you've accomplished despite the hardships you've endured. Also, your ECs seem to be very spread out with little focus, though you do seem very community-oriented. Maybe try to tie in what you want to major in with your ECs in your essay?

Good luck! Haha and sorry I couldn't exactly chance you.

UO should be a given considering your SAT score, but you are going to need to explain your GPA or they won't like you.

I'm not really familiar with most of those schools, but it looks like you have a fair chance. I think since you have an unusual profile there's a lot more uncertainty for you than there is for most people, and you might get into some tougher schools and be rejected from easier ones.

Thanks guys for your input. Can someone actually chance me for these schools?

University of Texas - Arlington- safety
Oklahoma State- safety
Arizona State- safety
UNC - Charlotte- safety
University of Oregon (In-State)- match
Indiana University - Bloomington- match
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (ED?)- reach
Texas A&M - College Station- match/slight reach
North Carolina State- match

Try to bring your GPA up to at least a 3.0. I know that U of O requires a 3.0 GPA to apply, so you'll need to write a great essay for them to overlook your GPA.

I agree with MickJag on all of his evaluations.

You'll have a hard time getting accepted by Indiana with a 2.7. They like many universities give preference to those with a 3.0 or higher. Only 6.5% of the incoming class had GPAs below a 3.0. Only 10% of the students at Oregon had below a 3.0.

Go to each schools website you are interested in and type in "common data set" and there will be a GPA scale included, it will tell you what percentage of people were accepted in each category, including GPA.

Thanks! Let's bump it up again.

btw i would have completed 8 APs by the time I graduate and 3 classes at a Community College by the end of senior year.

UTA, Oregon and Oklahoma should take you in. You're gonna have a tougher time with IU and UMN. The upward grade trend will definitely help, though.

though i know nothing about most of the schools, i can tell you that your EC's are great, and your in-state status at U of O is a plus, and i think if you properly convey your hardships in essays, you can get into most of those schools.

as far as your essay i would say write about your business. from what ive read its a general rule that you allow your gc to explain the reasons behind a week gpa, but if your business if moderately successful that would show ingenuity and all shorts of good stuff.

i'd say that is a definite strength in your app

Wow I dont know any of the schools you're applying to but I know someone who goes to Texas A&M and I heard you don't even need SAT scores to apply there...
anyways good luck!

I think you have a decent shot in all of them! Your background is also always an advantage. Texas A&M may be a reach, but I think you have just as much of a chance as anyone else!

your international school probably has some sort of factor in the admissions process and it's probably beneficial to you
btw what does "low reach" and "high reach" mean?
does low reach mean great possibility and high reach mean little possibility?
same for low match and high match?

University of Texas - Arlington- safety
Oklahoma State- safety
Arizona State- safety
UNC - Charlotte- high safety?
University of Oregon (In-State)- match
Indiana University - Bloomington- unsure
University of Minnesota - dunno
Texas A&M - College Station- low reach
North Carolina State- dunno

chance me too?

thanks guys! let's bump it.
