Wow, what a civil and decent comment that leads me to believe that you have any credibility. Someone who is unaware of the practices of formal logic (and its fallacies) is likely unaware of detailed history. If you do not believe that one should not insult a country one does not agree with, why is it acceptable to throw over-the-top reprehensible personal attacks at me?</p>

<p>Looking to the British presence in Ireland, there is a history of invasion, oppression, murder, slavery, theft, colonization, and constant resistance.</p>

<p>As for Northern Ireland in particular… Imagine I came into your house. Then I brought in a large number of my friends and followers into one room, kicking out anyone already there, then took a vote of everyone in the room if I should own that room or if you should own that room. Would that be legitimate?</p>

<p>I have no respect for an oppressive monarchy that banned Catholicism, executed priests, enslaved and shipped away 12,000 Irishmen in under a year, denied self-determination and native culture to a distinct and separate people, and even in modern times murders innocent peaceful protesters in the street and tortures prisoners, in violation of the Geneva Conventions.</p>

<p>Britain has never been legitimate in Ireland, and it never shall be. Given the more recent treaty, there is a peaceful manner to kick Britain out of the North, and with the Nationalist population growing over time (with the partition, planted Unionist settlers were the clear majority, but now it is much more even, given the connection of Catholicism with Nationalism and the Catholic tendency to have more children), it won’t be long before the British are voted out. It will be interesting to see, however, if Britain, in its final act in Ireland, will respect the will of the people, as it never did in the past.</p>

<p>I thought we’d come to the point where culture trumped territorial nationalism, but I guess not. That said, suppose you both are just highly patriotic. Being an anarchist, I personally don’t see any merit in any delineations between people, which is why I don’t understand opposition to immigration or cultural prejudices</p>

<p>I believe in national liberty in general, not just for Ireland. Palestine, Tibet, and other oppressed nations should also be freed (in a peaceful manner). As for Britain, it’s understandable that I’d be bent up over genocide and oppression that forced my ancestors to leave Ireland. Anyway, my point in posting here was just that I was shocked that there was such a terrible personal attack. Though it’s kind of amusing.</p>
