Lets see how many reaches I've applied to, will post results as they come

Universities: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCSB, UCR, Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona
Major: ChemE at all except SLO which is Mechanical Engineering, alt major is physics if it matters
Race: Hispanic
Disabilities: ADD
UC GPA: 3.0 (now you know why I titled my thread this)
ACT Scores: Highest- 31 (30 Reading, 34 Math, 30 English, 29 Science, 8 on Essay), other ACT- 30 (26 Reading, 29 Math, 29 English, 34 Science, 8 on Essay)
SAT: None
Subject Tests: Highest- 700 Physics, 690 Math 2
Senior Course Load with first semester grades:
World Fiction- C+
AP Calculus AB- B+
AP Physics B- A
Microeconomics- A
Government- A
Computer Graphics- A-
I also received an A- in a mandatory class that is a non a-g requirement

This semester is the same except I have Psychology instead of microeconomics and economics instead of government (all of these are 1 semester classes)

Wrote my Essay on how I changed from being lazy and shy to hardworking and friendly, which helps explain my low GPA. Counselor said it was one of the best she has ever read and I edited it several times with the help of an English Teacher.

ECs and Community Service: 300 Hours of tutoring Physics, Chemistry and Chemistry Honors and another Public School
25 Hours as a private tutor for a middle school student
20 Hours at a local boys and girls club
1 year of Varsity football, explained I didn't play my senior year because of a concussion
co-leader of my school's new fitness club only for this year though cause it started this year

Award: Varsity Letter in Football

Note: My School does not offer AP Chemistry which is why I am not taking it

Anyone? I’m not too good at chancing but I’ll chance back if you link me to your thread.

Can someone please help me? Even if you can only chance me on about 1 or 2 its fine.

Bump. Anyone? Please?

And ANOTHER bump. If i forgot something important that you need to chance me then let me know, even if you say no chance to any of them that will at least be something.

This is getting depressing, bump.

UCLA-reach… if your essay is really good you will probably get in
UCSD-low reach
UCI-match
UCD-match
UCSB-match
UCR-safety
Cal Poly SLO-High Match
Cal Poly Pomona-Low Match

could be off, but these are my guesses. If your essay is as great as you are saying, you have a good chance at UCLA and UCSD, good luck!

Thank you!!! This really makes me feel better knowing I actually have a chance at a lot of these schools.

Cal Poly mechanical engineering is probably the most competitive major in the entire university.

Cal Poly freshmen engineering admission averages:

Avg GPA: 4.08
Avg ACT: 31
Avg SAT: 1388 (out of 1600)

[Student Profile - Admissions - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)

Cal Poly and UC are legally barred from considering race. Although I think UC has more flexibility to consider applicants’ socioeconomic situations.

Also, Cal Poly has similar admission requirements to UCSB, and UCD. In fact for engineering, Cal Poly’s requirements are higher.

UCLA - Very High Reach
UCSD - High Reach
UCD - Reach
Cal Poly - Reach
UCSB - Reach
UCI - Low Reach
Cal Poly Pomona - High Match

You might get into some of the UCs if you are severely economically disadvantaged and you have a Pulitzer Prize winning essay. But it is still a long shot. What is hurting you the most is your UC GPA.

Cal Poly is a strictly number game.

Thanks monkey, would my learning disability help at all though or do they not consider it like they don’t consider race?

UCLA: High Reach
UCSD: High Reach
Cal Poly: Low Reach
UCSB: Low Reach
Pomona, UCI: High Match

Okay so what I’m getting:
UCLA: High/Very High Reach
UCSD: High Reach
UCD/UCSB: Reach
UCI: Low Reach/High Match
SLO: Low Reach/Reach
Pomona: High Match
UCR: Match? No one really mentions it haha
Am I in the ball park here?

hey… when i put my first comment i didnt see your GPA, maybe i thought it was 4.0, but don’t count on my predictions

@trey
Don’t worry about it, after everyone started saying reaches for all them I kind of thought yours were off a little bit.

They all look like low reaches to me, and some of them even matches. It’s good that you have a lot of ECs. Good luck!

Idk how the UC’s will react to the fact that your gpa is so low is because you were “lazy". Maybe you could say that your ADD was a big factor in your low grades or even your concussions (I played football too and had my fair share on concussions and I know that it can really mess up your memory and the amount of time that you can focus).

So I’d say that Ucr and CPP are your best bets. UCSB has been shown to accept students with really good essays and low gpa 's so there’s a chance there especially if your first Gen. The rest are reaches but definitely possible except for SLO since the

*their admissions is purely numbers based.

Did you apply to a CSU?

@Atlantic
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly SLO are both CSUs, I’m still waiting on results though, a few of my friends with much lower scores and higher GPAs have been accepted into UCR and CPP. Like I said I’ll tell you guys as soon as I get the letters.
@kiki
I did write about my ADD in the additional comment section and I said it made school significantly harder and I did mention my concussion however I didn’t mention how it impacted my grades. I’m hoping they will assume that now haha. Also thank God you said that about UCSB, that school is my second choice after UCLA.

Thanks everyone!!! I’ll post results as soon as I get them.

Your GPA isnt going to cut it for some of those schools but if you explained it as well as you did and show an upward trend then you may stand a chance. Your ACT scores are fine and should give you a boost alongside your ECs.
