Let's Talk about Oxford...

Hey,

I am a rising USA senior looking into applying to University of Oxford. It’s an amazing school, and I really love that they focus on test scores and the interview, as my test scores are exemplary and I’m sure I would do a good interview. Regardless, it’s still obviously extremely selective, and especially as an international applicant, I have a few concerns.

First off is the financial aid/scholarship information. Can anyone knowledgeable elaborate on that? I understand that it’s essentially minimal from my reading on the website. What if a student falls in the typical Ivy threshold of under $60k family income? Are they ever known to give full or almost full rides, of need-based aid?

Anyone also have generic insight into the Oxbridge application processes? I would really appreciate it.

If you need aid and have amazing stats, as a us student, unfortunately Oxford is not likely to be anywhere near your best deal.

As a US student you won’t get any meaningful financial aid from Oxford, no matter what your family finances are. Simple as that.

The process is pretty straightforward, but if you don’t have the finances there’s no point tormenting yourself about it. I’m sorry- maybe look at getting a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford for graduate school?

Thanks for the replies, not exactly what I had hoped to hear, but nonetheless. There are plenty of other fantastic schools out there.

What interests you about Oxford besides the admissions process?

I figure that it’s healthy to apply to an international university, and Oxford stands out as the premier out-of-USA school

For students with financial need, most schools outside of Germany and a few other Northwestern European countries aren’t really affordable (I also looked into it briefly.) And at those schools, there’s no on campus housing and it is very different from a US college.

I’ll keep that in mind, thanks for the info. I’m still more inclined to going to a top US college, but I guess it’s good to keep my doors open, haha.

@SSundee - My son will be attending Oxford for graduate school this fall. I don’t know if the undergrad is the same, but when he applied the application specifically asked how the tuition would be funded. When he was accepted, we had to get a letter from the bank confirming that we had enough funds to cover the cost and if necessary that the bank would extend a loan to us for the cost of tuition and living expenses. If you are planning on applying abroad, pay close attention to their dates.

Enjoy your senior year and all the excitement that comes with the college application process.

@Kajon Hi! I’m currently applying to Oxford PPE program and I was wondering if your son had to report all his AP scores to Oxford or just the ones pertinent to the major he was applying to.

@zoohunter, @Kajon’s son is a grad student, not undergrad. Completely different.
