Let's talk Broward

Hey you guys. I am still trying to decide which dorm I want to live in and I am currently thinking Broward would be nice. Now before anyone directs me to previous threads I have read them all MANY times but I still feel like I need more information. I have a few questions for anyone who is willing and able to answer them :D

Is it too warm, too cold, just right?

Is it really dark inside the rooms, should we bring more lighting than they provide?

What is the common area like? Are there tv’s pool tables etc?

Is there a kitchen for everyone to use so you can make your own (non-microwavable) food?

How is the noise level when you are inside your room, are the walls paper thin?

Is it humid; dry?

Does anyone have any pictures of inside the dorm, because UF’s site is severely lacking in that department!

Well that is all I can think of right now. I’d really appreciate any answers to any of the questions and any other input people might have. Thanks!

yay!! i'm not a new member anymore. haha, just had to add that :)

prd2beblonde22 - my daughter lives in Broward now and loves it. The walls are cinderblock (not thin). Each room has its own window AC...hers was new so it was terrific. The rooms are kinda dark, bring a desk lamp and a floor lamp. Each floor has a common study area with a large tv, couches and a full kitchen. Any other questions?

1. Is it too warm, too cold, just right?
There's an AC that works well, you can adjust it if you want.

2. Is it really dark inside the rooms, should we bring more lighting than they provide?
I would bring a desk lamp, they're necessary not only for lighting, but if you still are up and your roommate wants to go to bed.

3. What is the common area like? Are there tv's pool tables etc?
Common area on your floor is pretty dull. There's a tv, kitchen, a few couches, and a table. The common area for the entire dorm area has pool tables and stuff like that.

4. Is there a kitchen for everyone to use so you can make your own (non-microwavable) food?
Yea, everyone uses the same kitchen where you can cook your own food. You're going to be popular, everyone knows the chef of the floor. :)

5. How is the noise level when you are inside your room, are the walls paper thin?
You can certainly hear what's going on in the hallway. (doors slamming, people coming in and out, etc.) The walls are thick, but the problem is that the sound leaks through the door. It's not horrible though, but present.

6. Is it humid; dry?
Some days are worse than others. But I would bring an additional fan and put it besides your bed or something. The AC really should take care of that issue though.

7. Does anyone have any pictures of inside the dorm, because UF's site is severely lacking in that department!
No, but if you have ever seen pictures of other dorms, then it is pretty much the same thing. I'm sure if you spend enough time on google, you can prolly find something.

This is a typical room in Broward (before the kids moved in):

http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/1405223476074630562HVTJgX

thank you! you both have helped a lot! I think I will stick with Broward after reading your posts. Thank you for all of the information and the picture; its nothing special but its fine with me!

dunno if it helps but its def considered one of the coolest dorms to stay in as a frosh. im look forward to it

Maybe, but the truth is a lot of geeks choose it as well in hopes of appearing cooler.

I have chosen (in order of choice) broward, rawlings, and jennigs for the fall but i have a few questions.

how social exactly are these dorms? are the jus for slackers?

is making friends really easy. i make frineds really quick and have a really really diverse group of friends, but i am not used to living with so many white people (don't mean to get racial sorry) but i just wanna know will i have a lot of opportunity to meet a mixture of people (black, hispanic, jewish, asain) or will i just mainly be around one race.

how often does stealing occur?

whats the alcohol policy?

how easy is hooking up (i luv the ladies)?

do people still try to keep their grades up?

I have chosen (in order of choice) broward, rawlings, and jennigs for the fall but i have a few questions.

how social exactly are these dorms? are the jus for slackers?
-->Broward and Jennings are the most social, but Jennings is mostly girls.

is making friends really easy. i make frineds really quick and have a really really diverse group of friends, but i am not used to living with so many white people (don't mean to get racial sorry) but i just wanna know will i have a lot of opportunity to meet a mixture of people (black, hispanic, jewish, asain) or will i just mainly be around one race.
--> Making friends is pretty easy in these dorms, but it was kind of an adjustment for me because the things people talked about, I didnt care about. Broward esp has a lot of white, males who join frats. Jennings has a lot of sorority girls.

how often does stealing occur?
---> I never worked there, but I havent heard of it happening much. Usually things like that happen with roommate conflicts.

whats the alcohol policy?
--> You are a freshmen and most likely (<21), so you know the rules... no drinking. You will be written up if caught by your RA.

how easy is hooking up (i luv the ladies)?
---> Say focus when you come to UF, its really easy for you fail out. And they WILL kick you out if you fall below a 2.0

do people still try to keep their grades up?
--->Depends on the individual.

Im also an incoming freshman but ill answer the best i can based on what ive seen personally, heard from friends, etc

Every dorm (except apartment style) are social. Broward just happens to be in the middle of a good geographical location and simply grew a reputation. Its social to the point where you can always find something to do and someone to do it with. Not just for slackers, I plan to study a lot.

It depends, at first no one will know each other. Those individuals who go around meeting people, getting contacts, etc early will have a good social network. Your not used to living with white people? hahaha that cracked me up. We dont bite, and UF is very diverse. You CAN be in a set group (ie black fraternity) but if you dont TRY youll be with a diverse group.

Thats per-case really. My friends have all had things stolen, but mostly minimal items. Some had major expensive items stolen. To be safe, know your roomate well. Be sure to close your door if no ones there.

Campus is, technically, dry up until recently. Rules are no alkeehol unless over 21 and if you are over 21, it must be consumed in your own room alone or with other individuals meeting such criteria. The truth is it depends on your RA. If hes an ass, your screwed. Many RA's set up rules (ie drink, but dont be belligerent).

You shouldnt even ask that in the forums lol

Yes, or you flunk out. Keep a rule of thumb: study 2 hrs for every 1hr of lecture and party the rest

RA's can be separated into four categories: (this is in response to Ruo's comment #4)

RA's that actually enforce the rules to the letter. Pretty rare in my experience, but they're out there. (and they're not necessarily bad to have)

RA's that actually make an effort to get to know you/become friends/organize floor events. These are the best ones because they lie in the 'middle'.

RA's that don't care, that just stay in their rooms. They're basically there for the housing waiver.

RA's that do hang out with the floor, but are relaxed with the rules. These are pretty cool for sneaking alcohol.

aka...

Don't want to get fired.

Have too much time.

Will quit sooner or later.

Will get fired if caught.

lol

I added a fourth group, lol. :) But yea, you're right. And for #3, or they might get fired if things get out of control.

Ok grades arent my problem and I am shooting for a 4.0 (premed so good grades are must) I just wana know that everyone will have similar mindset as me (good grades, meet different people, and have mad fun). O yea about the white people thing, I have nothing against white people lol (all my grandparents are half irish) i just like really diverse settings (probably cuz i am one big mix). does anyone know if taking AP Bio (Campbell 7th edition AP Bio book) in 12th grade while be of any help when doing ollege science? is applied physiology and kinesiology a good major? easy, hard, in the middle? interesting?

O yea is broward always, always noisy or is studying in a good atmostphere possible?

You will use the same book in BSC2010/11 here, unless you get a 5 on the exam and skip those classes.

They have a mini-library downstairs so you can always study there.

Is it a must on taking that class if i do not get a 5 on the exam? what if i get a 3 or 4? Would it be a good idea to take the class if i will definitely get an A (i read the book cover to cover, all 1207 pages)

To get credit for BSC2010/2011 you have to get a 5 on the exam. If you get a 3 or 4 you get credit for BSC2008/BSC2008 and that is not the class premeds are suppose to take.
