Let's talk tattoos.

Ok, this is clearly driven by the other thread in which people talked about getting tattoos for their 18th.

My opinion is that their is nothing more beautiful than the human skin. I'm not directly criticizing anyone but IMO 99% of people with tattoos are rednecks, wanna be tough guys, promiscuous chicks (other words would work here but the sensor doesn't like them), or disillusioned youth. There are certainly examples when tattoos are meaningful but these situations are rare. For instance some girl may tell you her flower tattoo represents the divine love of her grandmother. B.S. That's not meaningful it's just an excuse to get a tattoo and not seem like a sl??. Someone else might have a tattoo with the initials of their mom to remember her after she died of cancer. That is meaningful.

So many people get tattoos between the ages of 18-30 because they think it is cool. This fad is pretty dumb. I think it's hilarious that people on CC who preach about avoiding peer pressure would fall into this trap. That tattoo is going to look like a gigantic bruise by the time you reach 40. People are going to look at you and laugh. They will judge you. From future romantic interests to your boss to your kids and grandchildren. If you feel the need to get a tattoo please get it in a place that is never publicly revealed.

Also I'd like to point out that I think your shade of skin does matter. I personally think tattoos can look OK on black people because it isn't as obvious. If you have light skin it is distracting and painfully awful looking. Also, white people with olive skin, Latinos, Asians, and others with medium shades of skin. Why get a tattoo? Our skin looks awesome.

One final thought.

100% of colored tattoos look like crap.

I got a tattoo on my 18th birthday. It was my grandma’s name (Grace) on my shoulder in old script. I got it because she died on my 3rd birthday and I’ve always felt like she has been protecting me my whole life.

My boyfriend is getting one of our dog’s name when he gets the money (she was literally like a child to us). She passed away last year (at only 2 years old) because of a brain tumor and it just killed us.

Other than that, I agree with you 90%. I hate the majority of tattoos unless you get them for good reasons.

For example, a girl I work with got her dad’s spirit guide tattooed on her arm after he died (he was Native American). She also got her nephew’s name on her shoulder after he passed away as a premie. Both of those are very good.

My best friend wants to get wings on her hips bones for no apparent reason. That is a waste of money.

Btw, that shade of skin crap is just that – crap. I have very, very white light skin and my tat looks fine. Who cares what color your skin is?

I mostly agree with you hatersunite, especially on the colored tattoos point, but I’m far more apathetic. I agree with everything romani said though. If you have a legit reason like hers, her bf’s, or the other examples she gave, I’m not going to be upset.
My brother has tattoos and they’re just as [insert adjective here] on black people as on white people, on dark skinned black people as on light skinned black people, as whatever as on whatever.
If you just want to get a tattoo, I don’t really care though. I mean, you’re probably going to look stupid when you’re 60 and saggy (no offense to 60 year olds!), but it’s not my issue. Unless you have a slag tag or something, I’m not going to think you’re a slattern.

One thing that annoys me sort of is when people get tattoos memorializing people who hated tattoos. Like if I got a tattoo about my grandmother. That would be ridiculous.

^ Haha, my grandma had a tattoo of my grandpa’s name (my grandpa was in the military so he had a bunch of tattoos, including one of her name). I guess names are just kind of what people do in my family.

I didn’t think about that though, it would be weird to get a tattoo of someone who hated tattoos. Actually, it’d be more ironic.

Tattoos aren’t exactly fads; fads die out over time.
Now bell bottom jeans and flat tops…that’s something else.

Second post-

Tattoos are simply much more obvious on very light skin compared to dark skin. The more obvious and out of place it is = the worse it is.

Sofie - Tattoos are certainly fads. 50 years ago you would be hard pressed to find tattoos in western society. In 2009 about 15% of the population has at least one tattoo.

That number, and this fad, will go down over the next 50 years.

EDIT: 2008 Harris Poll says 14% have a tattoo. The 2003 study showed that 16% have a tattoo. This would indicate that the fad is already dying.

Another Edit: Only 9% in the 18-24 age group claimed to have a tattoo. This once again indicates that the popularity is weakening.

Tattoos have been around since the stone age.

What are you talking about? Tattoos have been around in Western society for a very long time. As soon as the first electric tattoo machine came out in the 1890s, tattoos have been an American tradition.

Here: [United States Tattoo History - Tattooing In US - American Tattoos - Tattooing In America](United States Tattoo History)

Plus, around the world, they have thrived since the very origins of humanity. Tattoos are as much of a fad as clothing (as in wearing clothes, not bell bottoms).

what are you rambling about? so you’re allowed to get a tattoo because it’s your grandma’s name but other people shouldn’t for aesthetic reasons? that’s ■■■■■■■■.

Of course they have. But they haven’t been this popular…ever.

Nice try though.

“what are you rambling about? so you’re allowed to get a tattoo because it’s your grandma’s name but other people shouldn’t for aesthetic reasons? that’s ■■■■■■■■.”

Pretty much. She fits well into my first example.

No, they haven’t. But then again, it wasn’t popular for girls to wear pants or skirts as short as they do as it is now… ever. But try to tell me that is fad and we’re going back to ankle length skirts.

I would just like to point out that you said it in your OP:

I stick by what I said. If it’s meaningful, then good for you. To get one to get one, I think is a waste of money. Your choice to waste your money, I don’t really care.

Short skirts are definitely a fad. Pretty much all clothing and fashion follows in trends. In fact, I have already seen this awesome fad dying. Skirts are getting slightly longer. Full bathing suits or whatever those are called have reappeared in disturbing fashion. I see more jeans than in past years. Etc.

Yeah, 100% chance you have no mental memory of your grandmother since you were 3. Guardian angel lol. Like I said I’m not getting into it with anyone on this thread. However, you can’t possibly miss her since you never really met her.

okay there is some strange twist in your logic. is there a reason why you decided to use script instead of plain letters? I’m guessing because script is more aesthetically pleasing…

hater, you don’t know me or my family. One, I do remember her. I remember stuff from when I only a year old. Don’t tell me what I do and do not know. Two, I had a near death experience when I was 12 and my grandma was there (flatlined and all that jazz). Not that I need to justify myself to you. Three, ever hear of mediums? And no I don’t care if you believe me or not.

I meant short skirts as in anything above our ankles. We are not going back to floor length skirts, don’t care what you say. Pants are jeans… so thank you for helping me prove my point.

Continue to argue though, I’m out. Hate pointless off topic threads.

cs, both of my grandparents’ name tattoos were in script. That is why I continued it on.

Your boyfriend is getting a tattoo of your dead dog’s name. any legitimacy you had with your argument is gone.

cs, I said it if it is meaningful. That is MEANINGFUL to us. Again, I don’t have to justify my opinion to you. I said from the beginning, TO GET ONE JUST TO GET ONE, ** with no meaning attached ** is a waste of money IMO. It is not up to me to tell someone what is a meaningful memory or meaningful symbol to them.

Flower tattoo = slut? Um ok.

^ This is coming from someone who hates tattoos and would neverrr get one.
