Do financial aid offices process applicants who applied for financial aid? or is it only those who are likely to get in? The reason Im asking is that I recently received a letter from the financial aid office at Cornell asking me to fax/mail in T1 forms and all schedules. Is this any indication of my admissions status?

I received the same sort of letter. From what I know, Cornell is needblind for Canadians, so I don't think receiving a letter from Cornell's financial aid office is an indication that one is likely to be admitted.

they say they are, but are they really? A friend of mine sent the notice of assessment, like i did, but didnt receive a letter from the financial aid office. hmm hopeful thinking perhaps

I guess they wouldn't send those letters to you unless you genuinely have a chance, but still...why would they lie?

At many (especially larger) schools, the financial aid office works independently of admissions, i.e. they create a fin aid package for most students in advance because there wouldn't be enough time to delay the process until the actual decisions have been made.

i think b@r!um is right .. at places like northwestern, u can't even ask about the financial aid app from the admissions office.

Yep, I agree with b@r!um.

Quotation from MarylandGirl in the University of Richmond Thread:

But, you never know with this stuff. We got two letters from William and Mary asking for more detailed information for financial aid, and we thought it meant maybe she got admitted there, but she got rejected.......go figure.
Good luck everyone.

but at small LACs where admission is not need-blind, i guess those colleges won't ask for further financial aid info. if they do not intend to admit an applicant since determination of need is not independent of admissions.

does anyone agree?

curious kid, thats what i wanna know too. how about any past year applicants who have been in this predicament? been asked for financial records but rejected?

100% sure that this letter from finaid doesn't mean a thing. they send it to everyone who hasn't filed his finaid app yet. but int. mail is hideous, so ppl tend to get it at different times, even if u live close to each other.
