I received a letter today from the Dean of the College.

Excerpt:

As you've probably figured out by now, you are one of the applicants Dean Rapelye went out of her way to mention to me over the past few months. For that reason, I wanted to send along this note expressing my appreciation of your having applied to Princeton and my hope that you will agree that Princeton is an especially good match for your intellectual interests and aspirations.

Did everyone get this? I'm thinking that it's just a marketing ploy to try to get admitted students to go :p

I got one, too. I kind of felt like it came off fakish. I got one from a history prof, but I didn't show any interest in history at all in my app. I don't know if that means anything or not.

So, my personal feeling was that it was a marketing ploy, but then again I'm a cynic.

They're all from a history prof since the person who sends them, Dean Rapelye, as the letter notes, is a history prof. Everyone got the same letter it seems.

Hmm... so far I've gotten personalized letters, ie with handwritten notes, from Yale and Stanford. Come on, Princeton!

My letter wasn't from Dean Rapelye; it was from Nancy Weiss Malkiel and it came with a list titled "Departmental Faculty Contacts for Inquiries from Admitted Students"

i got very similar letters from other schools (i was rejected from pton, so obviously won't be getting one from them) but yeah, it looks like it's just an attempt to convince you to come. They want you to get all like "ooooh, princeton personally wants me!" Which is of course, sort of true, but the fact that you were admitted says that already.

btw, only ventured in here since i saw someone address this on the reg. pton forum.

exactly the same... at least they could have tried. if they had wanted to be even slightly realistic, she could have written what about my application made rapelye tell her about me one day. princeton is lagging in this department. fitzsimmons signed my harvard acceptance, and yale sent me a note, but nothing person from princeton! but princeton was never one to heavily recruit students.

I got one of those letters, too. I guess everyone gets them. It's kind of weird to make them feel personalized without mentioning anything specific. Hey, whatever works.
