Letter from Umich...

The OP is deferred to the regular pool. And it's likely that his current stats are not sufficient to warrant an admit at this point (4.0-4.1W is not impressive if you only achieve it in one year). If the OP continue to show an upward trend in his senior year, they will look at it again and evaluate it against the regular pool applicants at the time.

Perhaps if the OP can tell us his Michigan GPA (unweighed, soph/junior core subjects only, no +/-), we can draw a more definitive conclusion.

i am in the same boat kinda
i have a 3.7 gpa unweighted (90.5 according to my teachers), with a 34w, 34m, 27r, 30s in my second act and a 25w, 33m,34r,27s on my first sat so my best composite from one test is 31 and my high composite is 33 my sat's are ok 720 math 630 writing, i am on the track team, and the debate team and am also the founder of another team/club at my school. I also have some community service tutoring people who need help and volunteering at my local library and i am on the school newspaper , I also have taken ap euro sophmore year, ap us and bio junior year and 4-5 AP's senior year, additionally i have few awards and distinction and like 5 honors classes yet i got deferred from U mich what are my chances of getting in from the deferred pool, additionally my essays were really good.

asadahmed: I'm kind of surprised you were deferred. I think you have a good chance of getting in.

oh btw i forgot to mention my honors and wins in my application also i have a falling average due to course rigor and extra ciric pressure; freshman year 92 sophomore year due to ap euro 91 ish then junior year 90 and this yr 90 or 91 somewhere in between. additionally do u think i should talk to the coaches at U mich because i am not sure how much say they have

did you guys get that 7th semester grade field on your WA?

if that means do i have the grade in my hands my answer is no i am basing this off of my marking period grades we have three marking period in a semester the third being the final grrade of the semester and till know i have been average b+ and A in all my classes but ap us

We're on a trimester system. My friend got what you guys are calling the "good" deferral letter because Mich never received his first trimester grades. He had our counseling office send them over A.S.A.P. and he found out he was accepted around a week later, which was this past Sunday.

you would get in RD.

actually no we have two semester just the have a report card twice every semester and then a final grade at the end of the semester the report cards that we get in between are letter grades so yeah i got nothing to send but based on what i have had i am prolly 90ish

HI ASAD!!!! - how have you been?

ANYWAY, I just got my deferral letter from UMich today. bummer! =/ I wonder if there's a chance I'll just eventually get rejected...I'm out of state (CA) and have a 4.0 weighted, 3.6 unweighted GPA...2020 SAT's...decent extracirriculars but not stellar. president of two clubs. Does being out of state help or hurt my chances at this point if my senior year grades are about the same as always?

my letter was the same as the OP's, it asked for 7th semester grades but didn't specifically say "deferred".

i don't see it as a "soft deferral", just a deferral...it means we're getting moved to RD so what's the difference really?

is there anyone from the class of 2009, this year, that actually received a letter with the word "defer" in it? every one that I heard of just asked for 7th sem grades so I don't think there's any difference

On mine it says

"Your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date." and

"If a final decision has not been made on your application prior to completion of your fall semester, please ask your high school counselor to forward your new grades when they becomes avaliable."

the difference here i think is that in nrhk it means that they arent hundred percent but they prolly will accept you and the first means they need you 7 th semester grades additionally i heard that they actually differed a lot more than usually and accepted a lot few and denied quite a few but then my intel might be wrong. However personally there is no difference they deffered that is the moral of the story.

P.S. hi chanel :)

My deferral letter says "we believe you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus; however, we expect to receive more than 30,000 applications, etc....If a final decision has not been made on your application prior to the completion...then the guidance counselor statement from the previous post..."

Do everyone else's deferral letters say the same thing? There is no reference to "we need more information, etc." in my letter.

Letter received yesterday, postmarked and dated 12/18/2008.

I'm pretty sure I got the same letter as you jimmie3. I'm out of town so one of my friends opened the letter for me but I definitely did not receive the "let's see your 7th semester grades" deferral, but instead the one with the exact same wording you had.

GPA: 3.45/4
ACT: 32
Public school in Florida
Great Ecs
Great Essays
Great Recs
9 APs

yeah jimmie and taylor thats the same as nrhk and me. i asked my friend who goes to Mich about it. He said it just means that they need some more time to think its like a admit with reservation which is one of the five categories they assign you during the application process. the other are high admit, admit, reject with reservation (deferral as well but they usually ask for something explicit) and reject. I dont know how true my friends analysis is but i have heard similar things before.

For our sake...I hope your right

of course, the other way (and more pessimistic way) is to think that if they don't ask then they assume they're going to reject you and nothing else will help.

Could someone call and get a definite answer?
Or can we post all the deferral stats + letter type?

Status: Deferred. OOS North Carolina
I got the one that says "we believe you have something uniquely valuable, etc..." and no request for 7th semester grades unless there is no decision by that time.

jimmie, so you didnt see anything about 7th semester grade on your WA right?

Nope. My WA has not changed since day 1. My deferral letter says nothing about "need more information." It specifically says "deferred" and does not say anything about 7th semester grades except the paragraph that nrhk quoted above: ""If a final decision has not been made on your application prior to completion of your fall semester, please ask your high school counselor to forward your new grades when they becomes available."
