letter of acceptance already....

I just received a letter from the Financial Aid Office saying that they are missing my CSS profile and that I need to "submit it as soon as possible so that a financial aid decision can be made on my behalf." So, is it safe to assume that since they are ALREADY considering my financial aid award, then doesn't this mean that I am already "Accepted" and that my file has gone from admissions to the financial aid office? Is this a sign? Is it my luck that I "forgot" to submit the CSS profile and now I get this letter?!?! Also, my mother thinks that they would NOT take the time to "Chase" people down (who have not filed for aid) IF they didn't get accepted--MEANING, that I am already accepted because they ARE considering my aid. Make sense? SO, has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.!

I think it's a sign that you didn't submit your CSS profile.

You'll find out in 28 days. Don't make yourself go crazy now with the "what ifs" and "maybes."

The FA office is completely separate from the Admissions office. They put together an FA package for every applicant, AFAIK.

rsn - I was deferred too and I got the same letter today. I remember during early decision days people who were accepted ED got a FA letter indicating forms were missing - and I did not. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is a good sign - no matter how ridiculous it is. The only other letter I received regarding my incomplete FAF was from another school at which I have already been accepted. Best of luck to both of us.

Like someone else said in a previous thread, it's just standard procedure. There have been times where people have gotten notified that their financial aid stuff is missing, and still got rejected.

In reality, I know. I am just engaging in some wishful thinking.

Why are people jumping at the colleges telling them that they need to submit a form? Sorry for the sound of this question, but it seems like there are a lot of posts on this.

I think the essential question here is: Is the office of financial aid ACTUALLY seperate from the office of undergraduate admissions? Meaning, besides telling them who is applying, does the admission office give them any other information?

Anyone want to try to answer it?

I'm starting to wish that I left out a couple of financial aid forms...lol

I think the only other info the fin aid department will get is if you're accepted or not....otherwise they won't know who and who not to send FA packets to!

For ED I got the same letter about about a week before decisions came out, and I ended up getting in....could mean something.

My son received three inquiries from financial aids offices prior to getting accepted to all three of the schools which made the inquiry.

Is it a guarantee? No.

But if you think that the financial aid office goes through EVERY SINGLE application to assess its completeness even though 75 - 80% of the applicants will be rejected, uhhh, I really think people have better things to do than waste time like that.

Again, NOT A GUARANTEE, but clearly the application must have made past some kind of gate and moved on . . .

I do not know, I think it might be a sign that you got in. Phineas makes some convincing points and it is empirically proven that everybody who has received such letters has gotten in......

Well, I guess we'll see in 3 weeks....the people who got these letters should post about it after notifications come out for future CC members

rsn09 - what does your letter say exactly? Mine says "if you have not provided our office with the missing items, please do so as soon as possible so we can proceed with the review of your request for financial aid." I'm missing my parents tax returns and the FFA application according to the letter. My language does not sound as encouraging as yours. I know this is over-analyzing....

^ Mine says the same thing and that I'm missing my Parents' tax returns. I clearly remember mailing them back in January, thinking that they probably lost it. But then I realized that I sent them unsigned.

The glass half-full part of me tells me that Cornell wouldn't bother with sending me a letter for a signed copy unless they were at least thinking about accepting me. Again, just wishful thinking.

I would be happy because I doubt that Cornell prepares financial packages for over 30,000 students and then just throw out all that work for those that did not get accepted.

i got the same letter last week.. is there any way we can verify this with the ED admits?

Stringa1234 is an example of an ED who was asked for forms and then was admitted. I remember a lot of posts about the forms back at ED time, but I havent been able to find the threads. I don't see this issue coming up on other Ivy posts? Is this particular to Cornell within the Ivies?

There was a thead about this issue on 12-17-08 ED Financial Aid Paperwork that provides some indication that the request for missing financial aid papers and acceptance are related? I now officially have too much time on my hands.
