To sum it up in a few words, I got deferred and I want to send UM a letter of continued interest. I have no idea how to go about doing this and I've seen other CCers post about doing it and having good results.

1) Should the tone be any different than my college admissions essays? I'm struggling on how to begin or how to convey my interest in UM without acknowledging that I was disappointed in my deferral. Do I show my emotions or do I ignore it and simply write a hopeful essay? In other words, do I hide the fact that I got deferred?
2) How long should it be?
3) Who do I send it to?
4) Any other suggestions?

If I were you, I’d just go all out, meaning write what you truly feel and mean. That probably didn’t make any sense, but what I’m trying to say is that this letter isn’t required and it can’t hurt you. So, just write regularly and don’t try to write it as if you’re writing a legit college essay. Just write from your heart (wow, that sounded gay) and tell them why you really want to go to Michigan and why you truly belong there.

^Your advice is exactly what I did. I haven’t received my final decision yet so I don’t know what impact my letter had. Idk if I went about it the right away.

I def did express my emotions, including my disappointment about being deferred. I also included academic and extracurricular updates. For me there was a lot to talk about.

I didn’t write something long or emotional. I just told them that UMich is still my first choice and I will definately enroll in case I am accepted.

I got the same response that my friends, who wrote long and emotional essays, received. I think the letter is not transferred to the admissions officers because the response I got was saying that “your continued interest is noted”.

So I asked livechat and the girl told me to either mail it to their office of undergraduate admissions, fax it to them, or send it via their “ask us, knowledge base” link off their website.
