letter of explanation

I usually get one B per semester, but this semester ( my first semester senior year) i got 4 Bs. Im really really scared and i know this will definately affect my chances of admission.
I want to send a letter of explanation saying that my grandpa's death left me unable to concentrate but i dont want this to sound complain-y and i dont want it to be an excuse for my poor grades, since i do understand that it is ultimately my fault.
my question is.. when am i supposed to send this letter? since colleges wil probably be busy with all the incoming mail.

can someone please tell me?!
im freaking out a little here

You can ask your guidance counselor to add that information on the mid-year report. I’m sorry for your loss.

how about drafting the letter and asking the guidance counselor or an English teacher to read it to make sure it doesnt sound whiny. You can stress the steps you have taken to correct the grades and what you have learned from you trying experience. Also, speak from your heart and let them know how much your grandfather meant to you and why his loss matters to you.

I’m sorry for your loss.

I would like to add more from what jersey has said. It might be a good idea to tell how much you grandfather mean to you but just try to make committees understand you case, don’t try to make them feel pity-that wouldn’t be good.

Did the death of your grandfather actually affect your concentration, or is that just a way to explain your grades?
