Hey everyone, rising high school senior here. So, about a week ago I got a letter in the mail from Princeton saying that they are interested in students like me and offered me additional information about the campus + possibly a visit opportunity. I don't have the slightest clue how they became aware of my existence, as I have only taken the SAT once (2210, -1530 M & R) and I have received recognition as a National Merit Semi Finalist. Still, I did not send my scores to them and am confused as to why they would think I am the type of student they like.

Does this letter mean anything, and did any of you already accepted class of 09'ers get it last year? I mean, I still plan to take the SAT again and shoot for a 2300+ (the previous test I basically did without studying) and I'd like to build my EC resume a little bit more. Should I get my hopes up for next year? (I am currently top 5-10% in my graduating class and don't think I will drop of GPA wise).

From what I have heard, Princeton has been sending out more and more letters like these just to foster greater interest in the school and to get more people to apply. Unfortunately, I don’t think such letters are equivalent to likely letters or anything like that…

Unfortunately, I think that these types of letters are geared towards advertising and generating your interest.

The SSS (Student Search Service) that you can opt-in to when you take the PSAT and SAT’s, or any other College Board tests, is basically a mailing list that College Board sells to universities looking to try to recruit candidates.

for news about a Brand X college in the Ivy League and how it sends out its letters (which usually come out later in May). Tens of thousands of these letters are sent out.

everyone above is right. when you take tests like the SAT your name is put on a list that can be divided in many different ways (overall score, score/race). now adays universities purchase so many names from SAT and put them on an automatic mailing list to get “letters of interest.”

if you’re on the list it means you scored high enough to be purchased by the school. it doesn’t mean you’re in, but it’s better than getting nothing. ;)

Made you feel special. Glowing with pride. This is fishy, I didn’t do anything special. Doubting. I know, I’ll go ask CC! Oh, back to reality. Back to surfing…

don’t say it means nothing. It does mean SOMETHING. if it didn’t, they wouldn’t have sent you it. I think you should really consider visiting and/or applying to Princeton because if they sent you one of those letters, it means that you are a worthy applicant (and can be even more so if you write good essays, have awesome ec’s, etc.)
