Where do I get those 9x12 envelopes, post office? What kind of stamps should I get? I only have those USA First Class stamps. How many of those do I need? Or should I buy different stamps?

I heard they're about $.97, what kind of service is that? How come I'm getting $3 or $4 postage when I search on USPS's website.

Also, what do I put for return address?

Sorry if these questions are really dumb, but I've never mailed a 9x12 envelope before =/

Put the forms in and ask the post office to weigh one and tell you how much postage -- buy the stamps they tell you

Put the return address of the person who is writing the rec (you can print a page of stickers with each recommender's address - probably their name and the address of your high school)

You really do not need to use 9x12 envelopes unless the school specifically requests it. Stanford, for instance, asks for it.

If you do want to use them, as whylion said - go to any office big box, or even a place like target. These are common items. Regarding postage - you need to put a second stamp on the envelope. The second stamp cost less than the usual 1st class stamp, but if you want to make life easy, justu se 2 first class stamps. That shoudl do it for a normal rec that is just a few pages.

You are not mailing them - your recomenders are, so let them put the return address. You should put the send to address on them - and that will the admissions office of the school.

if you use the 9x12 envelopes, then the postage is 97 cents, even with only 2 or 3 sheets of paper in the envelopes. I took them in and had them weighed just the other day, so I don't think you can get by with just two 41 cent stamps.

Please be very careful to apply the correct postage to the envelopes with your recommendations. The postage rates changed significantly during the spring of 2007. For a large envelope, such as 9 x 12 inches, the rate for one ounce is $0.80 and each additional ounce is $0.17. Due to the weight of the envelope, two to three pages will require $0.97.

For letter size envelopes, 4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches, the rate is $0.41 for the first ounce and $0.17 for each additional ounce. There is an additional fee if the thickness of the envelope exceeds 1/4 inch.

Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. It's best just to bring the envelopes to the post office and just have them weigh it and pay for it right then and there. That way you know that they'll be sent no problem.
