Hey everyone. I'm wondering what exactly UNC requires for recommendation letters. I was under the impression that I'd need to get two, but the website says one will do. If that's the case, does the teacher have to be from an Academic subject? I'm planning on getting my Yearbook teacher to do my recommendation. She'll be my teacher for 4 semesters between my Junior and Senior years. Would it be alright to have her do my rec even though she's not one of my academic teachers?

If you think you’re borderline for getting in, then I would do two letters. I think the yearbook rec would be great; however, to show your academic promise, I would also get one from a primary subject teacher.

On a recent tour, students were told a teacher from an academic area. They were also told it didn’t have to be a class you received an A in but a class where the teacher knew you and your strengths.

I got in with one recommendation from my Art teacher (off the wait list after applying regular decision, but still…). I had her for five semesters and she knew me the best. Given that the CommonApp switch may have changed things, get it from the person that can write the best recommendation for you.
