Letter of Rec. from VIP

I have a letter of recommendation from a famous national politician. The letter is personal, anecdotal and very complimentary. It's not one of those "his parent's are supporters, I'm sure he's a great kid." The letter is written from personal experience and contact. I've known this politician all my life and he holds me in high regard.

Can this be a strong aspect of my application? Do adcoms really take these into account as a strong boost? Just wondering how such a letter will be considered in admissions offices. How much can this truly help?

I don't really know, but any genuine testament to your character can't really hurt. If it really is anecdotal and it does indicate that he/she isn't just writing a form letter, than I think it would be fine. If, on the other hand, you know him only through parents' donations or connections or something, and he's basically just a friend, maybe not so much. If you've done work for him, maybe he should include that. Again, that's just my guess.

By the way, who is it?

assuming that he really does know you, (maybe you were his aide or interned under him or something) it would probably be helpful. Should you send it? If this person was not a VIP, just a supervisor or something at a job, would you still send it? If the answer is yes, I say send it.

sending won't hurt. will give you the same boost as any well-written rec.
