letter of rec

Can I send off a letter of rec from a professor I never took a class with ? I did a lot of volunteer work under him and he would definitely fill one out for me if I asked.

Sure. In many ways this is even more powerful than a professor just saying you did well in class.

That’d good to know. The only thing that concerns me is that the instructor evaluation for common app ask which class I took with the professor … can he just our n/a?

This is incorrect, the CA Instructor Evaluation form is unambiguous:

After the Instructor LOR requirements are met, a supplemental LOR can be sent from a non-Instructor. However, they would just do so on letterhead, not the CA Instructor Evaluation form.

More important than what the Common App says is what the school you’re applying to says, so call up their admissions and ask.

I agree that the college website is important for finding transfer requirements, like how many LORs are needed. However, Instructor LORs are always from Profs/Instructors/TAs/etc. from classes you have taken for credit, someone you did volunteer work for would never satisfy the Instructor requirements for ANY college.
