I know I should not have looked at it, but I did.
My counsellor accidentally emailed one of my teacher’s letter of rec to me as an attached file.
I honestly did not imagine it could possibly be my LOR, and the title didn’t say so. It was a habit of mine to click the attached files before reading the context of the email. So anyways, I started reading it and when I realized that what I just read was a LOR, it was too late.
The letter was great. My teacher highlighted my academic potentials and creativity. But the problem was that one of his sentences clearly stated that I have an “interest in biology and veterinary science.” I think this was probably because I told him I would apply to Animal Science major for my ED school.
Unfortunately, I was rejected from my ED and have to prepare for RD. I applied as biology major in some of the schools, but I chose business major for quite a number of universities, which is a completely different field from Veterinary Science. How much would this impact me? Our school system uses Naviance so there is no way the teacher can edit his letter. By the way, the universities I am applying to are very selective and are known to have holistic admissions.
@lulu0207 - LoRs are important, but IMHO - not for “major” selections. There are a LOT of people who are interested in something, but majored in something else. I would not worry about just that one statement. Be happy that the LoR is very positive.
@MedSciBud Thank you! I hope the business schools don’t mind…
I hope this isn’t annoying, but if you can’t change it, don’t stress it.
@greenteen17 Do you think I should try to get another LOR in a week? My AP Lit teacher knows me very well and would probably be willing to help me. But the problem is that he would have to write it in a week. How long do teachers usually take writing a LOR??
Just ask your teacher if they can fit it in that time frame.
I think you should go for it. It honestly depends on the teacher, but a week seems ok. Explain your situation and he’s probably be happy to help. Good luck!
So I realized NYU only requires one LOR. I went to the counsellor’s office today and asked her if I could remove one of the LORs that stated that I have interest in biology. She said no because I passed the school’s application checklist deadline, which was December 5th. I am not trying to add a new letter of rec, just trying to delete one that was listed on Naviance. The letter is not sent to the college yet.
How difficult is it really to remove a letter from Naviance? I still don’t understand how the system works and if it is that big of an issue I guess I will have to deal with it but if it is something where you could simply click the “remove” button, I would be heartbroken :((
For the benefit of other students, it might be worth mentioning that you don’t have to tell your teacher what you are planning on majoring in. My D didn’t. She also didn’t tell her teachers where she was applying. She got into 9 colleges, several of which are very selective. She never saw her recs, as our school doesn’t allows that.
My D asked her French teacher and her Stats teacher for recs. No doubt they mentioned her ability in both those subjects. I don’t think the AO who read the app thus assumed that is what she would study. Colleges know that most students will change their majors. I don’t think anyone at NYU is going to care if OP said she wants to major in business and the teacher rec mentioned her interest in biology. It isn’t that big a deal, so try not to stress.
