Letter of Recommendation question

So I have a college that I REALLY want to go to which requires two teacher recs and one counselor rec. I am early decisioning here.

My question is whether I should have my rec writers to write specifically towards this college or to “whom it may concern”. My thought process is that since recs are more about the student’s personality and character, who they write to shouldn’t really matter? But also if it specifically written to a college, it might demonstrate interest?

Thanks!

That’s the answer. Additionally, AOs are cognizant of the fact (as you should be too) that teachers, even if they were so inclined, do not have the time/energy to tailor recs.

For those colleges that consider demonstrated interest (and many don’t), you need to demonstrate interest, not expect your teachers to do so.

Does anyone know how uploading the letters of rec works on CommonApp without a Naviance account when applying to multiple schools?

I’m not sure it’s possible. But a printer and a postage stamp work just as effectively.

That said, It’s not necessary for a teacher to tailor recs, and personally, I can think of no valid reason why I would ever deign to ask a teacher to do so.

It’s definitely possible. No Naviance at my Ds’ school. The teachers know how to upload it directly to the Common App.

Thanks. Teachers can upload their letters once through Naviance. Is the other recommender supposed to submit his letter manually to multiple schools on CommonApp?

In general, I agree that AOs know teachers/counselors do not tailor letters. However, if a letter was tailored, would it be a benefiting factor? In that the counselor or teacher cared so much for this particular student and their dreams that they went out of their way to write this recommendation? Because my counselor has updated me that he is planning on uploading one specifically for the college for my early decision by amending the one he wrote which is more general.

Even if it is possible, I don’t think it would be well received. If the college offers interviews though, you might take them up on it. Then your interviewer would also write a reaction letter or note. A visit and interview with someone in the department or major area of interest can also help.
