Letter of Recommendation Question...

When applying to schools that require one or more letters of recommendation from teachers, can we ask indirectly academic teachers? (Like Speech and Debate, Newspaper, etc.)

Or do we HAVE to stick with the standard one math/science teacher and one English/history teacher?

For the schools that require two letters, would we be downright rejected if we only send in one?

Okay, I know that's three questions in one, but thanks for your patience!

^^ Its not like that. The colleges suggest that you give two DIFFERENT recoms from two teachers who teach completely different subjects. Thats why MAth and English. You can pair up Physics and History teacher. Its your wish.

If you are going to get a rec from a non-core teacher, i.e. newspaper, debate, etc., I would use this as an additional rec. I would still get 2 recs from core teachers, i.e. math science, english, history or foriegn language. If you plan to major in science I think it is fine to get recs from a math and a science teacher, as long as the school does not specify an english teacher. I would not send in only one rec when they ask for two. However, if they only ask for one, it is really fine to send just one.

Each individual college will have suggestions or requirements for teacher letters. Most just say ‘2 academic subjects.’ I agree with the above poster that said a letter from a teacher in a non-core subject should be supplemental.

Would it be alright to send in another one from let’s say, my employer, besides the two teachers’ references?
