Letter of Recommendation

Hi,

I was just wondering if it would be looked down upon if I asked my business teacher to write my humanities letter of recommendation. She taught me Business & Management (an IB (similar to AP) class) and I feel like she knows my potential and me as an individual well. But will it be frowned upon if I don't get one from my English/History teachers who also like me but don't really know me as an individual that well?

I think the lack of responses is evidence that you likely won’t find your answer here. I think you should call or email the admissions office to ask if Business & Management can qualify as a humanities subject–I suspect it can, though it isn’t listed here: [Letters of Recommendation | MIT Admissions](Letters of recommendation | MIT Admissions)

I think whoever knows you and can portray you as a passionate person in writing is the person you should have write your recommendation.

Absolutely, but that person does have to fit MIT’s criteria for writing a particular letter.

I’m with lidusha – it’s worth asking the admissions office whether your business teacher qualifies to write the humanities rec. If they okay the subject, there’s no reason to worry. No particular teacher is preferred over another for each particular rec, as long as they teach a subject appropriate to write the recommendation. That is to say, MIT doesn’t prefer a biology teacher over a physics teacher for the math/science rec, but it wouldn’t be okay to have your English teacher write the math/science rec.

Evaluation A: Math or science teacher
Evaluation B: Humanities, social science, or language teacher

Business and Management teacher is fine for Evaluation B. If they wanted an English teacher, they would say English teacher.
