How many letter of recs did all of you send in? I somehow ended up with five (including teachers, counselor)...

i also sent in 5, including counselor rec

5?? i think that’s a little too much…

well, now that i think about it…i guess i have 4 including my GC rec, 2 teachers, and 1 from a piano teacher…

haha… oh well?

I hope not every one of your letters said similar things

yeah i hope not…i almost had six haha but realized how psycho that would be.
i had two teachers, counselor, alumni, and one from my mentor.
today’s also my alumni interview! ahh! has anyone had theirs yet?

^Nope, i put in my application on the 31st, so i think it might be a little bit too late for me to get an interview. Just curious though, if i do happen to get one, how do they contact you? Via email or phone?

i think it should be at least 3…from different departments …that would depend on your major though…

The alum contacted me by email, and I actually sent my application on November 1st! I think it just really depends on where you live!

^Ah okay got it thanks geisha. Hopefully I’ll get an interview too, I like meeting new people :(.

Anyway good luck with your interview!

hey i just had my alumni interview on tuesday!
it went really well, so fingers crossed! good luck to everyone who’s applying!

^What’s it like? Do they just ask the typical “Why do you like Penn, what can you contribute to Penn” question? Or is it more of a “I can just start talking about anything, a more ‘relaxed’ and ‘fun’” type of interview?

is it bad that my two teacher recommendations are from my 11th grade English teacher and 12th grade one? i havent really had a good experience with my science department (it sucks) and I’ve been taking math classes at the local college which are taught by grad students. :-/

briguy, I guess it depends on what you’re planning on majoring in?
My interview was alot more relaxed, especially since my interviewer was really young–he just graduated from Penn in '07. I think they try and match you with someone who has the same interests, so we had a lot to talk about. It really just felt like I was having coffee with a friend. He asked me a few questions about myself, my interests, extracurriculars, and I in turn asked him about his experiences. Don’t stress, the interview should be fine. The worst of it is already over anyways!

thanks for the info on the interviews! im looking to major in international relations/economics but definitely not a hard science. will this adversely affect me?

and can I send in an additional rec from a foreign language teacher?

I’m guessing it’ll be fairly okay since you’re looking into a major that’s more humanities based rather than math/science based. I’m sure it’d be fine if you send in an additional rec, but the adcom probably won’t be interested in it unless it says something really outstanding and unique about you that none of your other teachers might be able to say…it’s your choice though if you want to or not. I’m guessing you applied ED?

yeah i applied ED. like i read the two recs and they were amazing…the foreign language teacher one is kind of generic…like top 5% she’s ever taught…blah blah blah. is it worth it? and would i just send it through the mail? thanks for the help!

I wouldn’t send it if you’ve read it and you know it’s generic. It won’t help you in that case and it might take away from your 2 amazing recs. Better to let Penn think all of your teachers view you the way those 2 english teachers do. :)

haha alright thanks for the help peoplez :-)

I’d have to agree, if it’s generic then I wouldn’t send it in. I hate those generic letter of recs! I had to ask my math teacher to write me one at the last minute because my teacher of 3 years wrote a really bad, meaningless one!
