How many letters of recommendation do most colleges require? I already have one, should I ask for another?

Also, is it OK for my parent to ask my teacher for a LoC on Parent-Teacher night?

Thank you!

One, some ask for two.

Is it OK? Is your relationship with the teacher so shallow that you have to have mom/dad ask for you? Sound like a plan for failure to me. If you can’t ask the teacher yourself, how will he/she take you seriously?

From a teacher’s perspective, it’s just weird that a parent would ask for a LoR. You are the one who is applying not your parents, so it would definitely look better if you took some initiative and asked yourself.

Definitely ask for the letter of rec yourself. THey are writing a letter about you, not your parents.

As for the number or LoR, it depends on the college. Most require one, but some higher-tier schools might require two. It’s best to get one humanities LoR and a math/science/or other subject related to your intended major.

I would get at least 2, probably 3 to be safe. Try to make sure that the recommendations are varied, meaning they aren’t all from science or math teachers or something. One science teacher, one math teacher, and one humanities teacher is a good rule of thumb.
