hey...bryn mawr asks for a letter to your college roommate describing your background, interests, personality etc....does it hav to be in a letter format? and what kind of stuff will appeal to the admissions officers, given they hafta read tonnes of generic "im this im that" stuff ?

I'd do it in letter form, because that's for what the prompt asks. Include all those things (interests, personality, etc) but as it relates to living with someone, especially with one room. Like, a writer would talk about strewns of manuscript and crumpled papers across the the floor in an effort to find the perfect draft, rather than saying "I'm a novelist." If it's a supplemental essay (i.e. not the main, Common App-y one) most likely it's supposed to be rather straightforward.
